Welwyn Garden City 11 v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won By 8 wickets
Match report
The second XI got back to winning ways as a unbeaten third wicket 195 run
partnership between 80's kids TV star John Barr (127) and Simon Randall
(68) secured a comfortable 8 wicket victory.
WGC won the toss, and chose to bat on a good track with a fast outfield. Ed
Tucker, son and grandson of former RCC members Richard and Reg Tucker,
opened with a brisk 22 off 18 balls. He was then stumped smartly by Arjun
Luthra while trying to drive Stuart Browne. Following Tuckers dismissal the
game entered a more serene stage with scores of 65 and 51 from Daniel
Beynon and Matthew Hill taking WGC to 98 for 1 at the halfway stage. After
drinks a reshuffle in the bowling saw Haydn Smith and Jim Chaudry tie the
batsman down and whilst an excellent surface the spin duo kept the runs down
and also pick up 4 wickets between including 2 fine catches by Richard
Cameron. WGC made a reasonable 231 - 5 in their 53 overs with most RCC
bowlers reasonably economical, with Haydn Smith taking 3 - 66 in 16 overs,
Stuart Browne 1 - 19 in 10 miserly overs and Jim Chaudry 1 for 52 off 10
overs.
Jim Chaudry and Simon Randall opened RCC's innings, needing an average run
rate of nearly 5 an over from the available 47 overs. Jim was caught by a
fine Tucker catch at the end of the 9th over, for a brisk 22 (including five
4s) in 30 balls and when David Robinson fell unfortunately chasing a wide
ball Radlett's reply was stuttering at 37 for 2. Robbo's wicket brought John
Barr to the crease and immediately the 18 year old took charge of the
scoring rate. His first 50 came off 43 balls including some imperious driving
and his second 50 took just 39 balls as he proceeded to smash the WGC
bowling to all parts of the pretty Digswell Park ground. Altogether JB's 127
came off just 104 balls and included 14 4s and five 6s.
At the other end, Simon Randall, promoted from the 3's for his undefeated
ton the previous week supported John by batting carefully and correctly. He
accelerated his scoring rate towards the end of the game, reaching 68 not
out from 139 balls
With eleven balls remaining, RCC still needed 14 runs to win but any nerves
in the dressing room were soon settled as John Barr completed a splendid
innings by hitting these 14 runs off the next three balls, giving RCC
victory by 8 wickets.
