Radlett CC 1st XI v Bexley on Sun 17 Aug 2003 at 1:00
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets
Match report
Radlett, for the first time in their history, have reached the final of the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy after an historic win in front of a packed Cobden Hill crowd. The final to be played on the 14th September at the AMP Oval will be contested with Kent side Lordswood with the winner claiming one of club crickets most prestigious prizes.
After losing the toss it was no surprise that Nick Fielden’s men were asked to field first and with the Kent’s sides opening batsman Khan & Thompson going well in the first 14 overs Radlett looked like they would be chasing a large total. However from the moment Oz Edwards picked up the first wicket of Khan, LBW for 29, Radlett completed dominated the game. Edwards wicket brought former England & Kent all rounder, Min Patel to the wicket but his stay at the crease was a short one as Stuart Browne had him brilliant caught by wicket keeper David Hanson for a solitary run. With Browne & Edwards bowling magnificently in tandem Bexley innings ground to a halt and from a purposeful start after 20 overs the score had limped to just 59 for 3.
With Steve Naylor & Graham Dill replacing the economical Browne & Edwards, Bexley may have thought that the second string attack may yield more runs. However both players bowled with control and were ably backed up by some quite outstanding ground fielding. The fielding from the home time in general was superb with Jon Freedman & Jim Lewis patrolling the boundaries with great effectiveness and Nick Fielden stopping several runs in the in field. However it was Jim Chaudry who particular caught the eye, with several diving stops and one of the best catches Cobden Hill has ever witnessed. With Bexley looking to make a late charge the dangerous Joyce must have thought he had cracked 4 runs off Naylor until Chaudry leapt to his right to cling on to an amazing one handed diving catch.
With overs running out the batsman were forced to play more extravagant shots which inevitably led to more wickets. Naylor, Dill and Browne each collected 2 wickets apiece but star of the show was Edwards who finished with figures of 3 – 27 in his 10 overs. Matt Cousens completed the haul of wickets for Radlett as Bexley finished on 170 all out.
Having suffered an attack of the jitters in the previous round chasing 121, the batsman knew there was still a great deal to achieve victory. Having lost captain Nick Fielden for 12, who lost his off stump to a beast of a delivery bowled by former Kent player James Golding the nervousness may have crept into a few supporters minds again but with Steve Naylor joining Nick Hampton at the crease the pair were determined to guide Radlett to victory.
Hampton who has been in wonderful form all season once again showed why he is one of the competitions all time great performers. His array of classy shots were too good for Bexley who must have wondered where to bowl at the in form batsman. Naylor too produced some bludgeoning blows and together with some clever running between the wickets Bexley began to fear that it was not to be their day. Although both Hampton & Naylor gave a sharp chance each both opportunities came when Radlett were in touching distance of victory. The visitors target was comfortably overhauled with 8.4 overs remaining with Nick Hampton finishing on 65 not out but for his two wickets and for 77 not out the Man of the Match award went to Naylor.
Captain Nick Fielden said after the game ‘We didn't want to be forgotten as the losing semi finalists and thankfully now we're not going to be. We outplayed Bexley in every department of the game and, mentally, the players were clearly right from ball one. This is a result of the professional approach that has been instilled in us by our coach, David Houghton, and he must take a huge amount of credit for our achievements so far. We're just looking forward to the whole occasion of the final now and I know our supporters are as well.'
