Wimbledon v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sun 03 Aug 2003 at 1:00
Radlett CC Won 2 wickets

Match report Radlett booked their place in the semi finals of the prestigious Evenings Standard Challenge Trophy courtesy of a narrow last ball victory at the home of Surrey Premier champions Wimbledon. Wicket Keeper David Hanson struck the winnings runs in a tense affair to ignite a mini pitch invasion by both supporters and players alike.

With the spectre of Wimbledon’s famous centre court looming large over the picturesque cricket ground these two teams history in the quarter final of the competition bore comparison to that of Tim Henman at the famous all England club. Between the pair 8 previous quarter final matches had been played and on each occasion no further progress had been made.

On a fiercely hot day Wimbledon skipper Pearson won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat first. What was more surprising was the fact that his top 3 who had helped the Surrey side amass an extraordinary 319 runs the previous day capitulated to 30 – 3. However this was more to do with the fine bowling of Kervin Marc than poor batting. The fast West Indian was bowling a menacing line which accounted for a caught behind the wicket and two clean bowled dismissals. With new ball partner Stuart Browne also bowling his usual metronomic length and picking up two wickets Wimbledon were in real trouble with only 37 runs on the board for the loss of 5 wickets.

In similar instances this season Radlett have let their opponents off the hook but initially this was not to be the case. As with the rejuvenated Oz Edwards picking up two wickets in another fiery spell which confirmed his return to full fitness and Browne effecting a direct hit run out the hosts were left all but finished on 52 for 8.

However with the visitors strike bowlers completing their allotted overs Wimbledon began to claw their way back into the game with two defiant stands of 26 & more importantly a last wicket partnership of 43. The Wombles were eventually dismissed for 121 with Matt Cousens picking up the final wicket.

In reply Radlett got off to an excellent start without showing any of the nervous characteristics that are normally associated with chasing a small total. However once Hampton was dismissed for 20, Evans & Dill followed shortly after and the game was never released from a tense grip. Nick Fielden & Jon Freedman patiently began to rebuild the innings but just as the anxious Radlett faces began to show signs of composure a cascade of wickets left the visitors reeling on 68 for 7 and with a huge mountain to climb.

However with the old hand of Oz Edwards at the crease helping Freedman the Cobden Hill outfit again began to slowly steal towards their target. However with the scoring rate at little more than 2 runs per over the required run rate began to increase with Radlett in danger of both losing all their wickets and running out of overs. This danger was accentuated when Edwards was given out LBW for a vital 20 runs.

With 23 runs still required and 5 overs remaining David Hanson entered the affray and again although slow the target inched closer & closer. Upon entering the final over Radlett needed 11 runs but with Freedman scoring 3 runs from the third ball and some amazing running between the wickets the innings reached the last ball of the game with Radlett requiring a solitary run. With all fielders crowded around the bat this was achieved by Hanson’s supreme piercing cut to the boundary. Freedman who had led the Radlett fightback completed his best innings for the club on 33 not out and Hanson’s cameo earned him 11 runs.

Quote from the game

Captain Nick Fielden said ‘'To finally get to the semis of this prestigious competition is a great achievement for the team and the club. Its more a relief than anything having failed at the quarter final stage on a couple of occasions in the past. To have David Hanson in at the end hitting the winning runs was very fitting as he's been playing in the first team for over 20 years. Dave and Oz Edwards showed all their years of experience and, along with a great knock from John Freedman, that is what saw us home.'
