Match report The Ice-Man Cometh

On Sunday Radlett played Beckenham, who are currently flying high in the Kent league, in the last 16 of the Evening Standard cup. Batting first Radlett got off to a poor start losing the inform Nick Fielden at the start of the second over. Graham Dill followed shortly later inside edging the ball onto his pad, which ricochet onto his off peg. This was the last time Dill was going to be seen for the next few hours.

At 15 for 2 Radlett were faltering as Matt “The Ice Man” Evans strolled to the crease. Himself and Freedman set about repairing the damage with sharp running and good use of the leave or defensive push. They edged the score up to 70 before Freedman played down the wrong line and was bowled in the 17th over. Again Radlett were wobbling. Enter Stevie Naylor.

Nails set about the bowling attack with controlled aggression, hitting one pull shot with such power it’s a wonder the grass didn’t catch fire as the ball sped over it. Beckenham looked for a change and turned to their spinners. Left arm “full of himelf” bowled round from one end and a protégé from the Hegerty school of spin fired in off spinners from the other.

Nails majestically lofted the left armer into the sight screen a couple of times and Radlett at 120-3, with 15 overs to go were looking well placed. But as Boycott often says add a couple of wickets to the score and things don’t look so rosy. Radlett promptly did, in fact they added three. Nails got a faint edge to the keeper off full of himself. Jim Lewis attempted some sort of land speed record, which unfortunately wasn’t fast enough and was run out. Matt Cousins was adjudged to have nicked one to the keeper and he too was on his way. 120-3 to 130-6, thanks Boycott.

With ten overs to go Swerve and the Ice man needed to put something together. They duly did, the ice-man kept his cool and eased his way to fifty. Swerve blasted a couple of big hits, but all the while the running was good and the one’s and twos’ kept the board ticking. Swerve was then caught and bowled and the experienced Oz strode to the wicket. With overs running out the running and stroke play got more frantic, still the Ice-Man looked unfazed and with some good running, strong stroke-play and rather bizarre fielding Radlet posted 188. The Ice-Man run out on the last ball for an excellent 75

Radlet took the field knowing only their best would be good enough, or at least 10 of them did, for reasons un-known to most Stuart Browne decided to bowl the most expensive opening three overs of his life, something to do with the wind apparantly. Fortunately Swerve bowled with complete control at the other end allowing only 8 runs off his first 4 overs. But still the oppo moved to 35 without loss, not the start the Herts boys were after.

Fielders made a change and Oz replaced Swerve with immediate effect picking up a caught behind in his first over. This seemed to kick start brownie who promptly bowled his next six overs faultlessly although incredibly wicketlessly. Wickets were not a problem at the other end though where Oz was on fire. He grabed another two quick wickets, in a match changing spell, reducing the oppo to 54-3, the pressure was mounting.

Fielders made another change and replaced Oz with Nails who bowled an awesome spell of out swing bowling, asking questions of the batsman regularly throughout each and every over, even when the fitness looked like it might get the better of him. At the other end Brownie finished his spell and Ice Man was asked to get through a couple of overs. Despite bowling the most expensive over of the innings he did grab a wicket to make it 70-4. Still everything to play for.

Or there would have been if Nails hadn’t got the bit between his teeth, backed up by some great fielding the Beckenham chase began to crumble as wickets began to fall steadily. Steve nailed an impressive four for and the oppo were reduced to 120-8. Remembering from their innings how quickly things can change Radlett kept their foot on the floor and Cousins produced one of the moments of the day a wonderful sliding catch in the outfield off Dilly for the ninth wicket.

The batsman crossed and the number eleven, (surname Donald?) was at the non-strikers end with one ball of the over to go. With bat on ball the striker started to run, the number eleven did not, he’d probably seen that it had gone to dead eye Fielders and knew that he couldn’t beat his throw over 40 yards, yet alone 20, so he stood his ground. Fielders fizzed it in, Hamlet, stopped talking, and finished off an excellent day behind the stumps gathering the throw and took the bails off. The travelling supporters rose to their feet in triumph, a long journey for them had been rewarded and the players were keen to show their appreciation afterwards for their vocal efforts.

So Radlett progress to the next round thanks in the main to the Ice-Man and a team desire that should stand them in good stead for the next round.
