Radlett CC U11 v Letchworth on Thu 30 Aug 2007 at 5.15 pm
Radlett CC Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Radlett edged home in an enthralling final played out in stygian gloom. In truth the light was barely playable at 5 let alone 7 30, but on winning the toss,Radlett elected to field reasoning that bowling and fielding wouldn't be much fun later in the cold and dark.It wasn't,but then again, neither was batting........
Radlett didn't bowl as well as their warm up had suggested they might and ,understandably seemed a little nervous. An early wicket for Harry in the opening over did not lead to the expected pressure being heaped on Letchworth for whom Sprittles at number 3 looked a strong player taking the score to 31 before Will bowled the other opener. When Alex Shorthose took a fine catch in Luke's next over it looked like Letchworth might wilt. They probably would have if Sprittles had been caught in the next over but a high catch went to ground.
Luke Paice came back strongly to bowl with fire and Alex Shorthose generated disconcerting bounce before bowling Sprittles for a well made 22.Pond then took up the attack for Letchworth going aggressively for his lofted shots.Again, he should have been caught but another high chance went down in the gloom and he made the most of it, finishing on 30 not out to give Letchworth probably a par score of 96 given the conditions.
The light was very poor by the time Radlett's openers got to the crease, but as in the semi final they got the innings off to a fine start putting on 46 before Jaimin was run out for 17 taking a tight run to the keeper.Jaimin played some notable shots particularly one back foot force for 4. Will and Harry then continued serenely to take the score to 68,within sight of the finishing line, before Will tried a shot as inglorious as his cover drive for 4 the previous over had been cultured and was bowled also for 17. Alex and Harry moved the score on to 80 but the Letchworth fielding was brilliant, choking off run scoring opportunities.Frustrated, Alex had a bit of a yahoo and was bowled.4 overs to go,only 17 needed. The pressure mounted as over 17 yielded 3 runs.Giles tried for the boundary off the penultimate ball and again the death rattle was heard.1 run off the over.Harry couldn't get the strike and was run out off the last ball of the 19th over.We had eked out 9 runs in 5 overs .11 needed to win.
Cometh the hour cometh the Meepa. With wides off the first and third balls,Udeepa swung the second backward of square for 4. A swing and a miss.A no ball.4 to win-and it came in one scintillating drive through the covers.
Cue pandemonium.
A great game,as thrilling as the semi-where Meeps had also held his nerve in the last over,on that occasion with the ball.Well done boys and thanks to all those who came to watch.
