Knebworth Park v Radlett CC U15 on Sun 08 Jul 2007 at 10.00 am
Radlett CC Won 5 Wickets
Match report
13 years ago on 8 July, I experienced one emotion when my daughter died, but on 8 July 2007, I experienced only joy and happiness and I am truly happy and delighted as Radlett win the Hertfordshire Under 15 County Championship for the first time.
We arrived at Haileybury College, with our hope high although we did not know who we were playing. As we glanced across the magnificent setting of Haileybury, the boys from Outer Hertfordshire (Knebworth Park) came towards us. If transpires they beat Stevenage on Saturday morning to set up what looked an intriguing battle as we know they have a good colts set up and 3 or four very good County/Sub County players.
At 10.30, with formalities having been completed, Daniel Cohen and Tom Eaton tossed up and as Rat Bone Gray advised everybody on the website last week, The Cohens are good tossers! Indeed Daniel won the toss and elected to field as usual. The scene was set the battle ready to commence and the watching 125,396 crowded into their seats to get their sun tan.
The bell sounds the skipper runs in, finds the edge of Sub County player, Chapman's bat, Charles swoops and after an hour and a half consultation the umpires agree that the ball carried and Knebworth are 0-1. Enter the fray Hutchinson, another sub county player and on the last ball of the over Cohen gets one to jump and take the inside edge of the bat and Jackson at square leg takes a very sharp catch to leave Knebworth 1-2.
County player Eaton decides the best means of defence is attack and scores freely off county colleague Paternott, but Daniel is in the middle of an inspired spell. It had to be inspired after his previous efforts of 0-77 off 10!!!!
Daniel finishes his 4 overs with 3-10 having removed another County batsmen Louis Champion, to leave the Knebworth batting in tatters, but with Eaton playing a very fine and mature knock at the other end.
Knebworth are scoring at 5/6 an over but are losing a wicket every 10 balls, with Eaton being aggressive and scoring well. Cherkas comes on and bowls beautifully to claim 2-20 including the prized wicket of Eaton for 49 caught by the giant safe hands of Josh Hirschowitz. We keep the pressure on with some fine fielding especially one stop from Olly Jackson that was worthy of Jonty Rhodes. This lifted his team mates greatly.
Sahil Shah bowls his off spin with flight and guile and turned one 3.76 kilometres to beat number 10 Digwood, to leave Knebworth at 84 -9. A very good fighting partnership from Emsley and Gulliford sees Knebworth through to 98 with one ball to go and 100 looking on. They forgot about the quick fielding of Josh H and he runs out Emsley for a fighting 10.
99 to win, is not going to be easy against a good attack and on a low slow pitch with the Knebworth attack known to be good and fast.
Young Thorn opens up with a fiery spell at the Hertford Heath end and supported by Eaton (who looks like he has a dodgy action though). Letts and Nandhra are finding it hard to get the ball away and also finding it hard to nick singles. After 9 overs we are 21 without loss but needing to up the ante. Hardain fell to a good catch and I made a tactical change to get Josh H in at 3 rather than his agreed number 6. First ball goes for 2 , second for 4 and fourth for four. Josh on 10 we are away, shackles released. Basil is run out to a fantastic piece of work by Knebworth and Lloyd comes in to help Josh get the score to 64 before Lloyd falls to a fabulous in swinging yorker from his mate Chapman.
We wobble a little as Ben Cherkas and Aaron are out for 0 but Sahil comes in and plays fabulous thinking cricket by knocking singles and the occassional four to allow Josh the strike. 18th over we are 82 -5 and the Hirsch decides enough is enough and with Chairman of Selection Dave Thumper Holden watching and picking the shot, Josh slams a ball 75 meters over the boundary, causing one of the Knebworths Mums to run for her life!. Singles follow until Josh slaps the last ball for 4 and we are 96 - 5.
19th over is bowled and Sahil and Josh take 2 which leaves it 98 each and a leg side wide wins it for us.
A delighted team and 2 subs converge onto the field to engulf Josh and Sahil and I am congratulated by everyone but Hardains little brother!!!!
A fantastic end to a fantastic 5 years, but we have the National stages to do now.
Thanks go to all the payers who have played this year, whether it be every game or one game, each of you has helped Radlett achieve something that we have never done before - win the County Championship.
Both my sons now have County winners medals although Simeon's was at Under 9!!
I cannot thank all players enough for their support, especially Harry and Paras today who did not play but came to support. I must thank all parents for helping out when they could, all coaches for their assistance and if Shane does not come back next year then what a send off we have given him. Thanks also to Andy Gray, Paul Miller and Dave Holden for all their support.
I FULLY EXPECT DHIRESH and his team to retain this trophy next year.
WELL DONE THE UNDER 15's. Great to see everyone back at the club afterwards having a celebratory drink.
Man of the match. Despite Daniels fantastic spell of bowling as usual it goes to a batsman - Match Winner Josh Hirshowitz.
