Radlett CC U15 v Abbots Langley on Wed 02 May 2007 at 6.00
Radlett CC Won

Match report On a glorious eary spring evening at Radlett, the Under 15A team took their first step on what is hoped to be a championship title charge.

Our first opponents were a young but spirited Abbots Langley team, who is the past have given us some trouble.

Daniel Cohen lost the toss and was asked to bat first and how Abbots must have rued that decision as our Little and Large opening combination of Josh Hirschowitz and Basil Letts tore into the opening bowlers, with Basil racing to 25 in 10 balls before he got bored and charged down the track to be stumped in the 4th over with the score 44.

Josh continued to play the way he does best and smashed the ball into the fields surrounding the pitch and made his way to an impressive 50 retired. We lost our way a bit in the middle having been 95 for 2 off 10 overs but still scored 150 with some impressive batting from Ben Cherkas and Oliver Jackson.

We must learn to make use of the overs if we are to beat stronger teams and must use the overs wisely. I felt we were 25 runs short of what we should have scored, but we did well to score 150 which was a daunting target for the young Abbots side.

They had a very good opening bowler Gary Wallace who is a county player and a good young left armer caled Tomms who is only 13 and looks a useful prospect.

151 to get and the boys went out determined not to give the game away. Daniel opened up and with his first ball took out the off stump of young Battams. Roshan opened up with Daniel and strained a side muscle with his first ball which seemed to be the catalyst for Wallace to lauch a counter attack of Hirschowitz proportions with some blistering pulls and drives.

This called for the introduction of the Shah boys, Sahil and Paras, who slowed the scoring rate and frustrated Wallace. Paras especially bowled magnificently, finding a lovely rhythm and line and took 3 for 9 in his 4 overs which allowed only 3 scoring shots including an inside edge for 4.

Wiskets were tumbling by now and the light drawing in so Daniel introdcuced the non regular bowlers and even called for Letts. Basil threw the ball up into the night sky and it either went for four or took a wicket, to end up with 3 for 15 from 2 overs. Young Sam Chapman also took the opportunity to do a Hirsch and smashed 22 with the field up.

Radlett closed out the game with ease when Metcalfe junior was caught Davis bowled Letts (a real Habs triumph)

Overall a good start and a good workout for all the boys. We must tighten up a bit in the field and listen to the captain, but I must say I am looking forward to this season.

Many thanks to Shane for setting up the game due to my late arrival, Don Guerrini of Edgware for standing in as the first Mafiosa arbitrator and a special thanks for all 22 boys for playing the game in a gret spirit.
