Radlett CC 3rd XI v Kings Langley II on Sat 09 Aug 2003 at 1:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett started their match at a distinct disadvantage, their captain Richard having strained a fetlock whilst falling off a pork pie.

Tim Smithers deputised and immediately won the toss and chose to bat on a searingly hot day. Radlett batted well, the highlight being a beautifully constructed 93 not out from Mike Yeabsley, who hit the ball powerfully to all quarters. There were solid contributions from Dominic Ingram and Michael Clark, who had to retire hurt with dizziness and the shivers. It was later discovered that this was less due to the heat than to the fact that his jock strap had shrunk in the wash and strangulated the blood supply to his brain. Matt Bell looked in good nick and was unlucky to have been adjudged caught behind, and Old Haberdasher Prabagrandma Arumataposthouse, batted promisingly.

Thus Radlett amassed 252 for 4 after 50.3 overs. Poor Kings Langley dropped five straightforward catches that might have made their tenure of the field less exhausting.

This target was achievable on a good wicket, with a fast outfield and no swing in the air. But having fielded all afternoon in temperatures exceeding 90◦f could they manage it?

Kings Langley made a manful effort, but had to settle for a draw, in the face of bowling from Radlett that was at times excellent. Ross Carpenter produced certainly his best bowling performance for the 3rd XI, showing admirable control, and few bad deliveries. With his enthusiasm and talent, he is a good bloke to have in your team, and has a bright future. Another Colt, Ashley Tillett showed how much he has progressed, and bowled his leg breaks with remarkable control for such a young man. He made the ball spit and turn, and has the maturity to recover from being slogged. But he did have some luck getting one of his wickets with a high full toss. Arumwithavew also had some luck, but it was all bad. He beat the bat consistently, but despite being our best bowler, ended with an analysis of one for 77. Tough. Yeabsley bowled one over of complete offal and was lucky that it only cost 12 runs.

Kings Langley batted pluckily, with their fifteen year old Shaw batting with marvellous gusto to top score with 79. When he was eighth out with thirty to win in six overs, Radlett could no longer entice their opponents to risk their wickets in the chase for victory, and on such an easy wicket, survival is not difficult, so the result was a draw, with both sides having contributed to a good contest.
