Radlett CC 3rd XI v Cheshunt on Sat 19 Jul 2003 at 1:30
Radlett CC Lost 6 wickets

Match report Radlett were comprehensively out-batted by Cheshunt yesterday at Cobden Hill.

Cheshunt won the toss on a beautiful batting wicket under a hot sun, and elected to bowl, the decision of a captain who has a great deal of confidence in his team’s ability to chase a big total. Cheshunt stand second in the league, which is no surprise, but the initial plan for Radlett to bat them out of the game was adjusted when the runs came thick and fast, and Haxell declared after 51 overs.

Ingram and Barlow started confidently against a goodish opening attack and built an excellent foundation with an opening partnership of 111 at four and a half an over. Both made fine half centuries, and this more than solid start was built on by Wright and Gitay, who put on 77 at twelve an over.

After 51 overs Radlett had amassed 264 with a possible two further overs to increase their opponents’ fatigue and chances of heat stroke. Haxell, however, decided to stray from the script, and charitably as it turned out, declared at that score, leaving Cheshunt 49 overs to overtake that total, which they did with three overs to spare.

Cheshunt batted beautifully, Radlett dropped a couple of chances that certainly would have put some badly needed pressure on Cheshunt. This despite some good spells from Robinson, Paynter, Mark Grey and Haxell himself. But on a wicket made for batsmen, there was very little room for error, and Cheshunt eventually reached the target with something in hand.

Although this was a disappointment for Radlett, having batted well, full credit must be given to Cheshunt, who must surely have the strongest batting side in the division. Following Haxell’s declaration, Radlett Thirds are applying for Charity status.

The high spots for Radlett were certainly in the batting department, with Gitay coming back into form with his uncomplicated clean hitting, and Wright’s imitation of Popeye in hitting 58 in 39 deliveries, this pair adding 77 in 37 deliveries. You could hear the giggling for miles. Ingram and Barlow batted with aplomb, and created the situation from which the Badger and the Lumberjack could prosper.

Unfortunately, Radlett’s performance in the field, that had to be executed with precision on such a good batting surface, was below par. This is a surprise because this is where Radlett’s strength has lain this season.

It’s not yet time to put the champagne back in the box, but it will take a mighty effort for this spirited and competent side to finish in the top two.
