Match report Radlett came down to earth with a bump after a spineless batting performance brought about a withering defeat at the hands of Hemel Hempstead, played on a hot sunny Saturday afternoon at the newly built Old Albanians ground.

Hemel won the toss and chose to bat. The pitch was dry and cracked, but played truly enough bar the odd daisycutter. They batted well enough but were restricted by Robinson and Paynter who bowled medium pace with admirable control. Prabash Armageddarunin bowled ten overs of probing spin, and the bowlers were backed up by some good fielding, notably by Dennis Irwin, who was electric throughout.

Hemel totalled 198 for 8 after their 53 overs, which could have been much more, and after having chased 230 and prevailed by 8 wickets last week, the mood was upbeat.

33 and a half overs later, the mood was of black despair, Radlett having capitulated meekly, barely scraping 100 runs.

It is one thing to charge along at six an over against ordinary bowling on a shirt front, but Radlett lacked application and patience. The talent and experience is there, let’s hope that it is displayed more prominently next Saturday against second placed Cheshunt.
