Radlett CC 3rd XI v Brimsdown on Sat 21 Jun 2003 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 69 runs

Match report Radlett overwhelmed bottom of the table Brimsdown by 69 runs in the sunshine at Cobden Hill yesterday.

Brimsdown have not have their troubles to seek this season, having been evicted from their ground, and thus finding recruitment difficult. Consequently they have lost seven and won nil this year. Yet they have kept morale surprisingly high, and for part of this match looked at least that they would not lose this game.

Haxell won the toss and showed faith in his spinners to bowl out the opposition by electing to bat first. Even given an indifferent bowling attack, Radlett’s batting was excellent, led by a beautiful maiden hundred from sixteen-year-old Michael Crocker. In fact Crocker had never before made a fifty in any cricket. Having broken this barrier, expect the floodgates to open. This was a genuinely good innings, giving not a single chance, and keeping the ball on the floor at all times. He timed his innings to perfection, accelerating later on without ever resorting to slogging, and playing many authentic shots. Bringing this young player straight into the side as an opener has certainly paid dividends.

Ingram and Hutching played their part, pushing the score along at better than five an over, and Crocker was later joined by Tim Smithers, who looked totally comfortable. Brendan Hutchings’ batting caught the eye. He is a correct aggressive bat, and the Third XI will be happy to keep him from higher sides. He also fields aggressively and expertly.

Haxell declared the innings at 243 for 2 after 42 overs, leaving Radlett 58 overs to get nine Brimsdown wickets.

Opening with the muscular spin-twin pairing of Sudbery and Hardy without any luck, it took the new to be taken before the Haxell took the first wicket for Radlett. But at 61 for 4 it looked all up for Brimsdown. Yet while Watt was at the wicket, scoring freely, Brimsdown were not out of it, and kept up with the run rate. At 155 for 5, with 89 to win from 17 overs, Radlett must have been wishing they had bowled first.

Haxell, however, decided to take the pace off the ball and brought back the spinners with immediate success, wrapping up victory nineteen runs later with 14 overs to spare. The bowlers were backed up by some good catching, notably Ingram who pouched three sharp chances.

Hardy finished with three for 21, bowling with the handicap of a colostomy scar – a sporting injury inflicted by George, our new bowling machine. Backed up by some splendid bowling from Sudbery, and a couple of wickets for Hutchings’ off spin, the gamble to bat first was fully justified.

This brings Radlett back into the top third of the division, and after a stutter, back fighting for a promotion place. With the arrival of Brendan Hutchings and the coming of age of Michael Crocker, this was an important day.
