Radlett CC Sunday III v Boxmoor on Sun 02 Sep 2007 at 12,30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets
Match report
On a blissfully clear and bright day, skipper Gary Watson and his travelling imps landed on the home patch again to take on top of the table Boxmoor in the Chess Valley league.
Supremo Don Guerrini, unmercifully dumped several players who had got Radlett to near the top to ensure that the Under 16's could play. Many tears were shed in the Cohen household as Tony was told he could not play!!!! Bring back Bernie was the cry from Borehamwood but to no avail.
The game was delayed as the ladies of Radlett were defeating their opposition from the Park in Alexandra, on the top pitch before they descended on the bottom ground for their second game of the day. Where have I heard before that Men wait for ladies.
Skipper Watson called correctly and inserted Boxmoor, on a flat straw coloured Radlett track. In front of the watching thousands (Elaine and myself) Simmons and Watson jr were trying to bowl faster than each other but forgot that the batsmen are also allowed to play cricket and that propelling the grenade fast means the ball disappears faster!! In Phil's first over umpire Guerrini, displayed a marked resemblance to Air Italia as Phil was wide, wider, wider still and every wide, forcing Don G to extend his arms.
Openers Townsend and Cullinane looked useful until Simmo forced an error from Cullinane who skied a catch to the grateful buckets of Kailash Morjaria and little did we know it but Kailash's involvement in the game was finished! From 73 for 1 it went to 85 for 5 as Neel "Mean Machine " Malde weaved his magic spinners to take The Big Head Medal with a useful 4-21 in his 10 overs.
Word has it that Ramesh Powar was ringing Neel to find out how to spin a ball, but it turned out to be Vikram rather than Ramesh! Matt Johnson also bowled well and removed the dangerous Townsend for a well made 32. The last 4 wickets were shared by Shamit and Rob W although Shamit's first wicket was funny (not explaining here but the batsman walked for an LBW). Sahil bowled well without reward as Malde had used all the spinners luck for the day!
Captain Pugwash Watson, settled for the 130 all out although it would have been less had he held onto some catches! Gary even found time to change his shirt to the amusement of all concerned and in front of the ladies of Radlett who stopped their own game to see Gary's bronzed and oiled torso. How resplendent Gary looked in his new Radlett top however!!!
A sumptuous tea followed and we really must thank the ladies of Radlett for continuing to supply the best teas around and as Captain Watto decided on his line up, Supremo Guerrini pulled rank. At this time the Chelsea game was on the TV and Gary decided to watch the match with Rob Johnson.
The little and large left and right handed Letts and Malde opened up and put on a fantastic 98 partnership when Malde the merciless went for 52 having scored his 50 in 63 balls which allowed Rob Watson to enter the fray at 3. Basil stormed up to Rob and demanded that he be allowed to get to 50 and Rob agreed as long as Neel bought a jug. Basil went to his 50 in 57 balls and Rob smashed the winning runs in the 24th over to allow a comprehensive victory for the Watsons Marauders.
Thanks must go the Captain Courageous for stripping on the pitch and changing shirts for the benefit of the watching ladies team! Thanks to Umpire Don Guerrini for his organisational skills and to Daniel Cohen for scoring and getting fined for being 12th man.
The match awards:
Big Head Medal - Neel Malde
TFC award - Matt Soffair
Cuda award - Gary Watson (Cuda cost us the game)
Fine of the match - Daniel for being Daniel
Bravery award - Matt Johnson for standing next to Phil Simmons sr and saying "Aren't you small"
Next week if we beat Harpenden we could be crowned champions. A fantastic achievement for a team that was entered to allow them to gain experience.
