Radlett CC Won

Match report Sun July 22-2007
Tring Chess Valley 2 82 all out lost to Radlett Chess Valley 2 83-5 by 5 wickets.

At last the weather relented & we were able to play our 2nd Chess Valley match of the season. We had a fairly strong batting line up (on paper) & would have chosen to bat, but Shamit called wrong & Tring chose to bat. Just as well for us, as it turned out as this was allow scoring match with the pitch very responsive & doing a lot.
From the start Tring struggled against our opening bowling pair of Phil Simmons & John Mansell. John’s away swing repeatedly beat the bat & he was unlucky to remain wicket less conceding just 16 runs in his 6 overs. Phil, with his pace & in swingers did break through & took the first 3 wickets for 10 runs in his 6 overs.
How would we cope with our change bowlers? Josh Hirshovitz answered with a wicket in his first over, a low catch by Matt Soffair. There followed an excellent period of spin bowling by Hasit Mehta & debutant Kushal Patel, barely going at 2 an over for their spells. Hasit continually beat the outside edge with his left arm off spin, while Kushal varied his length & pace to good effect. Between them they took 5 wickets, Hasit 2-13 in 10 overs & Kushal 3-16 in his 8. Luca Guerrini showed his class behind the stumps, coping well with the variations & taking a stumping & catch. Shamit took the final wicket leaving Tring with a paltry 82, or so we thought!
Tring did not lie down & from the pavilion end their two left arm bowlers were cutting the ball in, causing lots of problems for Radlett’s batters. The openers Neel Malde & Shamit Nathwani were going along well before both went with only 21 on the board. Only Matt Soffair, who survived a first ball LBW shout looked in control. He had a good partnership with Kushal before Kushal was brilliantly stumped by an inswinger that the keeper took & removed the bailsbefore you could blink, Kushal’s back foot only briefly raised at the wrong moment. Kailash came in at 5 & hit a big 6 that just cleared the mid wicket fielder, befor falling Lbw to another that camein. With Josh Hirshovitz falling for a duck in he same over, we still needed 28 runs with 5 wickets left, & were makin a mea of this chase. However Hasit Mehta calmly came in to support Matt Soffair, unbeaten on 37, & the total was reached in the 21st over, with 23 overs remaining.
Nice to get the win, but more importantly, we bowled & fielded really well with good spirit. At last this team is playing & performing for Radlett Cricket Club, &, if the weather would just relent we could we can continue to learn & improve & show everyone what talented players we have. Now is the time to realize hat promise.
