Radlett CC Sunday III v Abbots Langley on Sun 08 Jul 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won

Match report Sun 8th July.Radllett Chess Valley 2s Bt Abbots Langley 2s by 7 wickets.

This match took some organizing. No pitch till Friday morning & very late drop outs, yet the match was played & won on the only sunny Sunday this season. Radlett managed to field 3 men’s teams this Sunday, a record in recent times.
We played at Watford council ground off Tolpits Lane. We arrived to see an undulating wicket & outfield but remarkably the pitch played OK & no wickets were attributable to it. The odd half tracker, when hitting the down slope did keep very low, or sat up nicely on the up slope but the match was played in a good spirit & some decent cricket ensued.
First, thanks to Hilary Robinson for bringing to Watford our fantastic teas. Much appreciated. And To David Robinson for so expertly captaining the side. And to Paresh, Abbots captain who helped organize the pitch & was as keen as us to play.
Radlett won the toss &, in view of the pitch, inserted Abbots. With a tall & nearly fast opening attack of Phil Simmons & Matt Johnson Radlett bowled well against decent cricketers. Just when Abbots upped the scoring rate, a wicket fell, Phil taking 2 good wickets, bowled in his opening spell, & Matt unlucky with a missed caught & bowled. Matt Soffair gave great confidence & encouragement in his new role as wicket keeper.
Glenn Rawlings had difficulty adjusting to bowling up the slope but did a good containing job as first change bowler while at the other end, late call up, Shamil Ahmed had good control with his off spin & bowled his 9 overs straight through, taking 4 for 24.
The number 5 bat was just getting away when Glenn Rawlings took a cool catch at long off. Once the 5th wicket fell the Abbotts batting struggled. Niki Veale, another late call up on the morning, was proving very difficult to get away & Radlett’s fielding stayed sharp, epitomized by the agile Bernie Soffair.
Phil & Matt came back on to dismiss the tail quickly,Matt Johnson taking 2-29 & Simmons 4 for 26. These two could develop into a great bowling partnership. The final low catch taking by Niki Veale was the catch of the innings. 141 all out should not be enough but Radlett also had a longish tail.
Ameer Kamal & Bhavin Kakkad looked an accomplished opening pair for Radlett & started comfortably but both got beaten by good moving balls. Matt Soffair came in at 3 & signalled his intent early on with a 6 into the nearby housing. However, Nick Robinson also fell cheaply to Abbot’s tightest bowler,Paresh & David Robinson came in to steady the ship. The 20th over proved pivotal with 23 runs coming off it & from then on Matt & David Robinson played sensible steady cricket knocking of singles & 2s with the occasional boundary. They both played chanceless quality innings , Soffair reaching 56no including 3 sixes & Robinson an undefeated 44. With 9 overs to spare it proved a comfortable victory in the end.
This is the second Sunday in July but only our first Chess Valley league fixture!
