Radlett CC Sunday III v Potters Bar on Sun 03 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report This was a close fought match between a feisty Radlett side against a good Potters Bar side including one class player who bowled and batted on a different level and made the difference.

We lost by two wickets, that could have been four five or six wickets without the sticking power, and team spirit that kept us in the game when a sound beating was looking likely.

Radlett won the toss and batted. Ben Weinberg and Josh Hershowitz got Radlett off to a perfect start, scoring at 5 an over and looking untroubled. Luca Guerrini came in at 45 when Josh was bowled playing across the line, but had more than done his job. When Ben Weinberg was bowled carelessly for a previously spotless 26, Radlett were expecting a score of 200 plus.

But some disciplined and quite excellent Potters Bar bowling limited Radlett to 151 all out. Ollie Jackson threatened to push Radlett towards a higher score, but the bowling was of a high standard and with Luca top scoring with 38, our total looked short of a winning one.

It turned out that the opposition had one very good batsman albeit an arrogant and unpleasant boy, who won the game for them.

Dan Cohen, (he's the one that doesn't stop talking) opened the bowling with the debutant Matt Johnson. Cohen bowled their opener with a delivery that would have taken out Kevin Pieterson, following this with a plumb lbw against their no 3 – 45 for 2. The Potters Bar star boy was, in the meantime, picking off runs at will. Matt Johnson, at the other end was playing his first game for the club. He is 6 foot 6 inches, very raw and very promising. When he puts the ball on the spot it comes from on high and is dangerous. He needs practice, but is keen and will be a very good prospect in the near future.

Glen Rawlings, another player new to Radlett, also bowled impressively and has the potential to learn the game at a different level and be a good cricketer. He is a natural sportsman.

Josh Hershowitz came on to bowl and was caned by the Potters Bar star arrogantly, but without bowling badly. He eventually gained an lbw decision against him (plumb) which the arrogant star boy took with the bad grace that he also took ignoring the Radlett team's genuine expressions of “well batted” as he sulked back to the pavillion, having only made 62 of the total of 78 scored thus far. One boy team?

Josh went on to bowl really beautifully, which together with his unflustered batting and committed fielding, points him out as a young player to watch.

Ben Cherkas, however, came on to bowl and was a revelation. He has a smooth run up and balanced action that enabled him to control the ball and brought him three wickets for not many. This was a result of bowling a line on off stump, and pitching the ball up to the bat consistently. He was the pick of a bunch of bowlers who all have massive potential, and to their eternal credit, never gave up.

We lost the game by two wickets. A close game decided by one player who was a different class, (and he knows it). Our performance made me proud to be in charge. The side were, to a man, sparky, full of life, and played the match with a smile. Dan Cohen didn't stop talking, so by the law of averages some of what he said had to be true, Ollie Jackson batted with spirit, will be a good cricketer, and has a spark, Josh Hirshowitz bowled and batted well, and caught a blinding catch in the covers that nobody will forget – keep this lad with Radlett, He has both talent and the desire. You need both.

Ben Weinberg is a cultured bat, and had he stayed in could have won the game for us. Teje Malde is a batter of pedigree, young but with a big future and a good understanding of the game. Ollie Jackson is a breath of fresh air with talent and can bat, bowl, and contributed massively to the sum of team spirit, which makes him a joy to have in the side. Harry Benjamin is a player that every captain wants in his side; committed and keen, and will contribute more with practice.

The tall Matt Johnson, playing his first game for Radlett, could prove to be a devastating bowler, with his height and willingness to learn. He bowled some unplayable deliveries, and I look forward to monitoring his development. The other debutant, Glenn Rawlings, again has the makings of a player who can bat and bowl, and wants to learn – he also has the team ethos which is essential.

The irrepressible Dan Cohen, between giving everybody advice, bowled a superb opening spell, showing great control and intelligence besides adding a real spark to the proceedings. Don't ever underrate this bloke.

Luca Guerrini, apart from batting with aplomb and top scoring, kept wicket beautifully. He is a class act, underrated, and for me will undoubtedly play at the top level for Radlett. He is a nice bloke too.

But the player of the day for me was Ben Cherkas. He was our outstanding bowler, taking 3 for 18, and almost won the game for Radlett. Someone must tell him so that he can develop and grow his bowling talent.

We lost this game, but I am proud of the whole team, their commitment, humour and spirit. If this is the future of Radlett cricket, we have nothing to worry about.
