Rickmansworth II v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 31 May 2003 at 1:30
Match was Drawn

Match report After a dreadful bowling performance had vastly reduced their chances of a win, Radlett barely had the resources to force a draw against a Rickmansworth side much improved from last year. Part of the secret of Rickmansworth’s upward development was the simple expedient of fielding a full eleven players. When that extra player happens to score an excellent unbeaten hundred, it’s bound to make a difference.

Liss, the Rickmansworth centurian, led his sides’s revival from 92 for six to total 221 all out. This was assisted by some Radlett bowling that contained far too many bad deliveries. This was especially disappointing as Radlett’s bowling so far this season has been excellent.

Haxell lost the toss and Radlett were put in the field. Rickmansworth initially looked comfortable, until Warne, behind the stumps, decided to stand up to the wicket, which cramped the batsmen and put them under enough pressure for a steady flow of wickets to ensue. Despite the large number of “four-balls”, there was enough good stuff to reduce Rickmansworth to 92 for six, and Radlett were well on top. The bowlers then gave the initiative back to the opposition, and by the time Ingram came on to mop up the tail, the damage had been done.

222 to win on a decent wicket in the sunshine was certainly not impossible, but was made more difficult when Ingram was harshly adjudged lbw early on. Hardy then batted belligerently, supported by the tall Tasmanian Taylor to give Radlett a solid base upon which to launch a final assault. But when Hardy was out at 87 for 2 for an excellent fifty, wickets fell at regular intervals, and the impetus was lost. The only ray of hope came from a scintillating unbeaten fifty by captain Haxell who was at his brilliant best, and actually made victory an outside possibility up until the final overs.

Radlett then batted out for a draw still some forty runs adrift, so retained some pride. This was a poor performance by Radlett though they were frustrated by just one player, and there was an excellent debut performance behind the stumps by Colin Warne. It was good to see a return to batting form from Hardy, and Haxell’s sparkling innings at better than a run a ball came without the bother of playing himself in. But the bowling was too sloppy to rein in a good batting side, which must be improved on if we are to get promotion.
