Radlett CC 5th XI v Met. Police Bushey 11 on Sat 14 Jul 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 5 wickets
Match report
This week’s match was eagerly awaited as Met Police were being hosted at Queens for the first time. The conditions are testing and the clashes prove to be dramatically competitive and spirited. This game will be noted for overcoming all aspects of these testing conditions to seal a historical win. Vikram won the toss and opted to take the field on a humid but slightly cloudy day. Met Police had a strong outfit of players and were ready for battle from the start. The new opening pair was Keerthi and Ross Carpenter. Ross has developed into a keen strike bowler of prominent ability and this showed in his performance. Ross beat the bat continuously once he found his line. There were a few balls that batsman relentlessly hit through frustration. Good pace and on a length found out the openers. Keerthi bowled to his standards averagely and he did not bowl the wicket taking balls enough which eluded him but was extremely economical. The pitch did not offer assistance for movement in the air. Ross 4th over 2nd ball bowled a ripper which was caught by Trevor at 1st slip. By this time Keerthi had 6 overs and Vikram was in action 1st over was tight so got his rhythm early and 2nd over with his 1st ball bamboozled opposition Stephen Marsh with an on the stumps ball that he could not get away and played on unexpectedly. 35 for 2 after 14 overs was an excellent start. The bowlers kept committed and had to earn wickets rather than pitch doing the work or batsman giving away their wicket. Their captain soon was caught behind for 17. The no. 4 was now unleashing power shots early hitting a massive straight six not seen at Queens for a while. Ross finished the longest pace spell of the season after 14 overs. Matt after a considerable gap of play resumed bowling in this game with a spell that reaped no wickets but added spin variety which difference. Vikram persistent with line bowling managed to dismiss their tall 6’5 batter lbw on middle stump. This was a breakthrough but the main plunderer was still at the wicket and he kept the innings alive for the Met. From 45 for 3 to 135 for 4 and at 172 for 5 a lot of work was required. Some ideal change of bowling with young debutant Sahil (the spin bowler) Shah produced a magic spell of 5 overs. The no. 4 demolished his 1st and 2nd over with 5 boundaries and still it did not deny the youngster taking 2 wickets in over 3 a skier caught by Matt at deep mid wicket which was a credit to the fielder and return catch off his own bowling. This was another turning point in the match. Ross was now in the frame again to deliver a 2nd spell of 4 overs 10 runs and 3 wickets.
All the hard work by all the bowlers came to resounding climax when Ross destroyed the tail in his final over and also cleaned bowled the no. 11 with last ball of the innings. Met were denied 200 as they were all out for 190. Bowling was extremely good on a hard pitch for swing bowling. Radlett held on to all but 1 catch and fielding was also attacking and a good standard. Met had set a fairly decent target now it depended on Radlett innings for the end result. Tony Peck and Mike constructed a stand of 79 from 19 overs. This was an excellent pace of 4 runs an over. Tony smashed 6 boundaries and really disseminated the bad balls and got right on top of the bowling so they could not settle. Tony was hitting clean and was unmoved with any of the openers. Mike played correctly and batted for 1hr 20 until he edged to keeper for 28 and Tony for 41 for a retun catch to bowler. Andrew Saunders got a good ball and was left to return after facing one ball to see the stumps in a mess. Unfortunate but Radlett had to larger picture of seeing where these 110 runs were going to come from. Shameel another newcomer stuck around for 9 overs for his 2. But when Shameel went to the crease he just missed having to face Stephen Marsh hat trick ball as it was end of the over. Nick Tune for his 1st game with the 5th team was both nervy and tentative although mentally on top of the situation at hand. 98 for 4 after 28 overs was just about the run rate required and Trevor Woolf added a partnership of 13 before he edged out for 8. Nick had grabbed a boundary as his first scoring runs early on looked comfortable and throughout made play look easy. His timing approach to shot selection and placement was skilful and excellent. Keerthi had joined the crease and his concentrated persona while batting or even fielding needs to be seen to be believed. He was the perfect foil for Nick. A flurry of singles from both players found them easing into the bowling. Nick soon unleashed a dangerous repertoire of shots that quickly took him to 47 and Keerthi kept it to just nudges and ground strokes. Nick by this time had grabbed the game by the horns and Met were in serious trouble the target in the lst 11 overs was 70 plus and this was being dissected to precision awesome display of batting. Nick hit a powerful straight 6 to reassert his presence and ensure the opposition as to who was in command. He finished the game with 2 lovely straight drives for 4 to score 69 not out. Keerthi was 20 not out and the partnership was unbroken for 82. Radlett won with 8 balls to spare a superb team effort and display of a thumping cricket performance. This registered the first win of the season.
Man of the Match: Nick Tune for 69 n.o. with seven 4’s and one 6.
Nick managed to play well in a tricky situation to take the team home without placing pressure on the late order & remained clinical in doing so.
