Southgate Compton 11 v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 09 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 61 runs

Match report Week 6 saw Radlett travelling to Southgate Compton based in Cockfosters a mid table team with a lot of division 11 experience. The pitch was very green and ridged with a difficult humidity engulfing the day conditions were testing. Radlett lost the toss and were fielding due to the hot humid condition the home team opted to bat.

Openers Vikram and Keerthi bowled a miserly combination for the first 10 overs until Keerthi was strained and came off with 1 wicket. Vikram bowled 10 overs of a memorable sustained and containing spell which produced 1 wicket caught behind giving only 15 runs. The bowling was on the spot and any width or short delivery would get the treatment but no boundaries were taken for many overs. Run rate was less than 1.5 so batters were on the back foot with Radlett in the driving seat. Daniel bowled well with the odd out of line ball. We managed a direct hit run out with Mark Turpin taking fielding honours to dismiss the opener. At 28 for 3 it was time to really step up a gear. Daniel bowled their captain and he really got his rhythm going. Matt Barrett took over the opening end and first ball mesmerised the batter with a return catch that was brilliant. Same over again Matt had a hard stroke to cover point scooped with agility by the newcomer Mayur he too joined the party and took a blinder of a catch. At 32 for 6 Radlett could do no wrong. The no. 6 batsman a left hander showed resistance and held on. Matt bowled till the end. Brendan came to bowl and he did not find the areas on the pitch he seeked and his last over of 6 went for 15 odd runs. The pitch was a very testing track and all bowlers had to stay in the corridor - off stump area plus bowl a good length to restrict batsman getting swing or footwork. Mark Turpin another bowling find in the team managed to get a wicket from his 6 overs and did well to offer a change of pace but went for too many runs. Daniel returned towards the end and Matt had plugged away with spin and shooters and bowled an extremely well coordinated spell of god length bowling giving batters no room for movement. Matt got an appeal and now with 8 wickets down we had to get the rest out. Fielding was strong alert and only 2 catches were missed all day so a good effort as a result of the excellent bowling. Daniel got another clean bowled and Matt finished off with a catch taken at mid on. 125 was the final score it could have been 70 or 80 all out. Matt and Vikram bowled 22 overs and gave 31 runs in contrast to the other end bowling 25 overs and giving 94 runs. Economy bowling is going to be a key feature if Radlett are to secure any wins this season.

Radlett batting was undesirably low key except for Matt Barrett’s 15 over resistance. To have a team reeling on 32 for 6 and then letting them reach a hundred is asking for trouble.

Mike opened with newcomer Mayur and early on 2nd over Mike got an extremely bad call for lbw which wasn’t short of ruining the match if not losing it. Mayur followed shortly with no runs and at 11 for 2 after 7 overs was not the illustrious start we seeked. The top 7 batsman did not get to double figures and the score reached was 17 for 6 after 16 overs. This was a top and middle order collapse of the highest scale maybe in all games to date. Paul Rich prodded around for his 7 for a good 10 overs with Matt. The bowling was unchanged throughout and the left arm spinner was doing all the wicket taking which was accurate angled bowling which probably batters did not get accustomed to throughout the match. The 24 partnership ended with Paul out and Brendan, Vikram soon followed without making inroads. Radlett were doomed and really chances of winning were just short of a miracle. Daniel was stranded on 1 when Matt heaved for a big shot for 27 but did take the batting honours with his occupation of the crease.

Radlett 64 for 10 after 33.3 overs and thumping win for opposition by 61 runs. Low scoring games are hard work and not easily drawn let alone won.

Man of the match: Matt Barret for 27 runs, 2 catches and 4 for 17 off 12.3 overs with 5 maidens. Matt played a good game and delivered throughout to contribute significantly.

Radlett are still position 19 with 38 points having taken 10 points from this game still eludes them from a first victory so far. There is a lot to play for not just pride but position as well this forthcoming summer.
