Berkhamsted II v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 24 May 2003 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets
Match report
This was a very satisfying win for Radlett 3rds, the second in two starts, both of which have been overwhelming.
This time the bowlers were the stars, bowling a tight line and extracting swing and seam from a slow wicket, which had been rained on for most of the week. Luckily, the weather was kind, although the match lasted until barely five overs after tea.
Captain Haxell again took the bull by the horns, deciding to bat on winning the toss, which, this early in the season is the decision of a confident man. Brown and Carpenter bowled with excellent control, forcing rash strokes which produced three early wickets. When they were taken off, the going got even tougher for the Berko batters. Haxell and Gitay bowled absolutely beautifully, slowing the run rate to snail’s pace, and claiming between them five wickets for a mere thirteen runs in seventeen overs.
Young Mark Gray came on with his superbly flighted leg spinner to nip out a couple of wickets himself. With some competent fielding, the net result was Berkamstead all out for just sixty eight after 37.4 overs of torture.
Although this was never a challenging total, and this Berkamstead team will certainly be one of the weakest we will play this season, the win was reached with some ease, with Ingram (35) and Taylor (16) unbeaten at the end, and Hardy, who bludgeoned 15, was the only dismissal, and a soft one at that.
This leaves Radlett 3rds in the top quarter of the league, having won two matches, and lost two games to the weather, and even though the opposition has not been strong, this team have shown themselves to be a very competent outfit.
They will trouble, and indeed beat, much better sides in their quest for promotion to division four, and I for one wouldn’t bet against it.
