Radlett CC 4th XI v Watford Town 11 on Sat 08 Sep 2007 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by eight wickets
Match report
The 4XI went into the final game of the season needing 12 points to stave off relegation. They were playing a Watford Town side that had been relegated the previous week. This seemed to have taken the pressure off as Watford promptly amassed 202 all out just shy of their 53 overs. Felton and Gunjan were the only batsmen to really get a partnership going as they put on 85 for the third wicket. Radlett though, held their nerve and once the dangerous Felton had been dismissed they were able to take regular wickets, Hardy finishing with superb figures of 5-26 from 10 overs. At tea Radlett knew they had their fate in their own hands, albeit knowing they needed their highest score of the season to win the game. Their first target having taken 10 wickets was 2 more bonus points. This set a target of 155 to guarantee survival. What has been lacking most this season apart from obvious confidence were partnerships and Radlett knew that they had to get off to a good start to have any chance of achieving safety. What ensued was quite incredible. Matt Bell and Mark Gray set about the run chase with unbelievable vigour and showed little regard for the new ball smashing it to all parts of the ground. As confidence grew, the ball just got hit harder and further as the runs raced along. When Gray departed after a ball that kept low for a steady 35, Bell took it upon himself to score for both batsmen. Smashing rank bad balls away including 7 sixes and 15 fours, he brought his 100 up in only 56 deliveries. It was all the more sweet that after taking a single for his first ever hundred that his next delivery was pushed for two and the 155 mark that kept the fourths in division 6. Disappointing as it was when he got out with 5 runs needed it allowed the massing support to show their appreciation for one of the most bizarre innings ever seen on the bottom pitch. Bell finished with 136 runs from just 74 deliveries. Hopefully next season won't prove to be quite as dramatic and let’s hope for some dry weather and a rise up the table. Thank you to Laura Lambert for scoring each game, its most appreciated by all and to Charlie Randall for his match reports. A fitting end to Matt Bell's reign as 4XI captain.
