Match report
Radlett IV’s fate in Division Six will be settled in the final round of matches next Saturday after they wasted the chance to guarantee safety when they lost by two runs at Hertford III.
It might sound exciting, but the game was strangely antiseptic. Having bowled Hertford out for 104, Radlett should have cruised to victory on a slow pitch that had been well prepared and held no terrors at all for batsmen beyond low bounce. Only Nick Tune was prepared to show patience as a succession of batsmen perished through slack, heedless shots, which summed up the unsuccessful season.
Tune took the score to 70 for four before he hit a full toss to extra cover two short of his first fifty for the fourths, and the innings ran out of steam in disappointing fashion. Even with the last pair requiring four to win, Radlett did not look like saving their season with a game to spare. They are 19 points ahead of Boxmoor, who occupy the final relegation place, and Watford Town II, already doomed, are the next opponents at Cobden Hill.
The day started very well at Hertford when Neil Lederman took three early wickets, all bowled. When a throw-in from the deep by Toby Sutherland – fresh from a school trip to Tanzania -- hit the stumps after an outrageous bounce for a run-out, the home side slipped to four for four. The recovery was surpressed by Chandana Meepagama, who bowled all through for almost 23 overs, and Jez Menzies, picking up three wickets. The final total looked eminently gettable, but when Charlie Randall clipped a full toss to midwicket and Matt Bell was yorked, doubts began to undermine the innings.
