Match report Radlett IV slipped further into Division Six relegation trouble with a weak showing against a young Letchworth III side. There was no argument that the 125-run defeat at Cobden Hill was merited.

There were no positive aspects apart from a good spell of medium-pace bowling from Jez Menzies, with four wickets for 37, his best return for a number of years. The batting was execrable, as though everybody was waiting for next season to arrive.

The pitch was cut out of turf from an old colts (nothing wrong with that term) pitch to save cancellation. The surface was very soft indeed, and Matt Bell decided to bowl first. Only in hindsight could that be said to be the wrong decision, because Letchworth proved to have very little bowling power. The pitch was so slow the bowlers had difficulty finding a challenging length, and the ball only started jumping in the second innings.

Letchworth’s openers put on 121, and Radlett’s winning chances effectively were out of the window. Only when the batsmen tried to force the pace, did wickets fall. Bell, with a fly in his eye, caught a steepler safely using one good eye, and Charlie Randall held an awkward one in the deep.

Radlett gave themselves no chance of further points with heedless batting against undemanding bowling and they need to pick up confidence against fellow strugglers Hertford III, next Saturday, and Watford Town II in their final relegation matches.
