Match report Radlett IV slipped to their fourth consecutive Division Six defeat when they lost by 49 runs to Hemel Hempstead III, though their haul of nine points kept them above the relegation slots.

The crisis of availability in the club enforced seven team changes – better than last week when there were eight – and left a weak side that included only one batsman with any form at this level. That was Charlie Randall, the stand-in captain, but as he dropped two catches and was bowled first ball, his contribution could be written on a postage stamp with room to spare.

Hemel won the toss and did well to reach 187 for nine after excellent seam-bowling from Chandana Meepagama, Neil Lederman and Chris Brown in the heat at Bushey Metropolitan Police ground. Radlett never gained momentum in reply after losing Randall to an inswinger first ball of the innings. Vishal Patel, lobbing up a leading edge, went next over.

Lloyd Paternott finished as top scorer with 29 and ‘Meeps’ hit 27 at the rarified heights of No 4. The tail made runs confidently enough to suggest that a few more top order runs might have been enough to change the result.

In the field Radlett did well, with Matt Barrett and Jez Menzies outstanding and they both held important skied catches. After Hemel slipped to 112 for six, Cheesewright, a disaffected first-teamer returning to the game, made an absolutely crucial fifty.
