Totteridge 11 v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 07 Jul 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost 56 runs
Match report
THE problem with Matt Bell’s captaincy of Radlett IV has been his inability to win the toss. Totteridge II made use of the sunshine and their own low, slow pitch to bat first, and Radlett were never really in this Division Six game for the rest of the afternoon, losing by 56 runs.
The table seems to have split in two, Radlett occupying the top of the second half with relegation more likely than promotion. The game was not as one-sided as the scores might indicate because Totteridge were contained reasonably well and only an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 73 in about seven overs tilted the balance significantly. At the end the victors had only seven balls to spare.
All the bowlers were tidy without much penetration though Charlie Randall and Richard Hardy dropped return catches they should have held. Two of the four wickets were run-outs by Bell – the first a bullet throw resulting in a direct hit, the second stemming from the confusion caused by his own dropped catch.
Radlett began their pursuit with newcomer and late fill-in Sam Senchall opening because he had to attend a birthday party in the West End, but the prospect of half an hour of mayhem before his ‘retirement’ ended in the second over. However he held a good catch and could be proud of his day along with another university student Jake Cunliffe, returning to cricket after a gap since his Radlett under-15 days.
Bell batted at his very best for the top score of 44 before succumbing to the day’s only controversial moment, lbw edging a full toss on to his knee roll. Richard Hardy began with a trademark driven six, making 40, though he had to survive to two hair-raising dropped catches – once when the bowler and mid-off collided shaping for a dolly catch.
.The last pair Chris Brown and an in-form Neil Lederman added 33 for the last wicket, raising the points haul to six before Brown succumbed to a full length ball.
