Abbots Langley 11 v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 09 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 55 runs

Match report Radlett IV moved into mid-table with their second win, disposing of Abbots Langley II by 55 runs. They had endured an uneven start to the season, but this was a top-drawer all-round performance that brought Matt Bell his first victory as captain.
The venue was switched to the Chiltern Sports Club ground on the outskirts of Rickmansworth because the Abbots Langley ground was out of commission due to a village festival. Though the Chiltern 06 CC ground was a pleasant place with a rural feel, the pitch was soft, apparently due to underground seepage from a nearby waterworks site. Radlett were put in to bat, which was no bad thing because the pitch gradually firmed up and allowed the seam to bite.
Bell implored his team to bat through all 53 overs to set up victory and proceeded to perish in the first over, having pulled the day’s second ball for six, though he was unlucky that his leg glance was caught behind. Radlett did manage to bat through for 150 for nine, and Louis Wentzel shattered the Abbots upper order with five wickets, supported by the reliable Chandana Meepagama. Two catches were taken at short-leg by Jez Menzies, including a sharp one off a leg-side clip to give Wentzel two wickets in two balls. From 41 for seven, there was no way back for Abbots.
Radlett’s total – formidable in the circumstances – was built round determined knocks from Charlie Randall and Tony Johnson, with useful support right down the order. Three batsmen hit sixes as their first scoring stroke – Bell, Richard Hardy and Wentzel, the jovial South African who drove two straight sixes with a cracked bat. When Wentzel decided to defend he was bowled, which annoyed him a lot.
Most deliveries stopped or ‘died’ on the pitch. Johnson felt useless, looked useless and was useless – but he struck in there with character and played a decisive innings, with Wentzel and Pete Trainer adding crucial runs in the tail. .Abbots said afterwards they were expecting to chase 120 and knew Radlett had too many runs on the board.

(Unfortunately the game was marred by some aggressive abuse aimed at a small child by the veteran Charlie Randall. Having missed the ball by a mile only Charlie seemed to believe that the polite young man had been caught behind. A torrent of expletives followed which rightly made the 7(teen) year old cry. Thankfully the boy's mother managed to calm him down and he 'retired hurt' never to be seen again. The really disappointing thing from the other Radlett team members’ point of view is that Randall showed no remorse and was seen making obscene hand gestures as the boy was ushered away still cradled in his mothers bosom. This unseemly incident will be dealt with by the club officials at a later date and Randall's place will be assessed as to whether he can be trusted to emulate the proper spirit of a Radlett cricket club member.) Cheers, Belly
