Radlett CC 4th XI v Chorleywood 11 on Sat 26 May 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won 7 wickets
Match report
Radlett IV lifted themselves off the foot of Division Six by surging to seven-wicket win over Chorleywood II at Cobden Hill, with off-spin all-rounder Richard Hardy taking five wickets and smashing 46 not out to guarantee victory with almost eight overs to spare.
After two bad defeats in two outings Radlett needed a tonic. Six changes were made after the awful nine-wicket reverse at Parkfield, allowing stand-in captain Jamie Wells an extraordinarily wide range of bowling available, which he used astutely. Putting the opponents in was a brave gamble, because the points system would have rooted Radlett to the bottom if they had failed.
It was nice to welcome Chorleywood back as one of Radlett’s oldest opponents in pre-league history. Their two top sides had endured a couple of bad seasons, but their second team were cheerfully competitive and shrugged off intermittent drizzle that saddled them with a wet ball. The pitch was a Nick Searle special, offering good carry and regular bounce that offered a good test of bat and ball. Nevertheless Radlett beat them on merit to raise their hopes for the season.
Radlett’s seamers, including Louis Wentzel on his league debut, did not get the wickets their efforts deserved as Chorleywood built a sound base towards a substantial total, but from 118 for two with 20 overs left they began losing wickets when Hardy was brought into the attack and extracted spin. He slowed down the scoring rate, clean-bowled three victims and held a steepling return catch. A stumping off the last ball of the innings completed his haul.
Chorleywood’s total of 188 for nine seemed about par, but Radlett’s chased worked almost to perfection as the classy veteran Charlie Randall played carefully to ensure the ‘hard yards’ were covered before the final assault. Even the loss of Tony Johnson and Nick Tune in one over failed to halt progress as Zed Gitay and then Hardy kept the score moving at a respectable pace. Finally Hardy and Randall put on 104 together in the 14 overs to make an awkward task in the gloom seem ridiculously easy, Randall batting through undefeated for 79.
