Datchworth v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 08 Sep 2007 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won won by 49 runs

Match report Finally from the last match of the season the 3's achieved the win they had been striving for. On a sporting looking wicket Smithers lost the toss and Datchworth, who had to win, asked Radlett to bat. All the batters struggled against the conditions and an opening attack that knew how to use them. However Matt made a good 31 that contained a series of well executed boundaries and Simon Gray showed real fight and spirit in not only conquering a stonking hangover but also anything that Datchworth could bowl at him. Simon has never let the 3's down this season and his 56, within the context of the game, proved to be the match winning innings. Of the remaining combatants only Dom and Shamit were able to reach double figures and we were all out in the 48th over for 125. The general concenus at tea was that this was insufficent and we'd blown our slim chances of 4th division survival. Enter the bowlers!!

Josh and Phil opened and right from the first ball bowled with fire and aggression. Phil got his customary wicket with his second delivery, his uncanny ability to produce Jaffa's at oppertune times has proved invaluable in our fight for survival. Josh also hit the stumps twice in his opening spell and by the 7th over D's reply was stumbling at 11 for 3. Numbers 5 & 6 looked for a time as though they might take the game away from us but the introduction of Chris and Prabs not only slowed their scoring rate but accounted for their wickets. Prabs and especially Chris bowled superbly, with the ball beating the bat on countless occasions. Chris picked up 3 wickets aided by two catches from Iain at silly mid off, the second of which was an amazing effort where he allowed the ball to hit him before catching it on the second rebound. He got a serious fine after the game for clowning!! Josh came back on to apply the coup de grace which he accomplished in style by clean bowling their last 3 batters and ending up with a well deserved 'Michelle'. Datchworth all out for 76, would the other results go in our favour, could we avoid the drop? Haxell's mob had already won so things looked black.

Then Simon got a phone call from the redoubtable Charlie, there was an unsbstantiated rumour that Shenley had stuffed Bayford and that they were now definately in the relegation shake up. As usual Charlies sources proved impeccable, Bayford had only got 5 points when they needed 9, by the skin of our teeth and thanks to the 1's excellent season and despite Hax's best efforts we were staying put.

Congratulations to all those who played in the 3's this year especially to the guys that have turned out in the last few weeks and busted a gut for the cause. Also many thanks to Dom, Birdie, Tee Cee + Daniel and Bernie for taking away a few of the headaches of captaincy. It's not been an easy season but the spirit has never waned and it's down to that and some exceptional bowling in the last game that's eventually seen us through. Now we know what to expect I think we can do some real damage next time we're out there.

Best wishes to all,
Tim.
