Radlett CC 3rd XI v Wormley on Sat 01 Sep 2007 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost 2 wickets
Match report
So near and yet so far, is the story of this game against a good Wormley side who also are a very pleasant and sociable lot.
Captain Smithers won the toss and took first use of the wicket, but unfortunately Matt Soffair was out to an outstanding catch from Captain Donald Stevenson off his youngest sons bowling. Dom Ingram and Simon Randall both looked good but both got out when well set with Randall the vistim of a fabulous caught and bowled from Aussie Wallis. Iain Edwards was another who got in and out and this allowed Prabhu and Shamit a chance to rebuild the innings in their own ways. Shamit batted beautifully and was watchful whilst the "Doc" was brutal and scored 39 in 40 balls until he was beaten by wallis's quicker ball.
Wickets were then lost until Ross Carpenter joined Shamit and they put on 43 for the last wicket to take us to 182 which looked well out of rewach at one stage.
After a sumptious tea, we returned to the sun drenched lower field and attacked with gusto with Josh Rose getting the hard hitting Hussain out caught behind by the skipper. Wallis looked positive and a decent player until undone by a Phil Simmons jaffa, which uprooted his middle stump. Rose and Simmons looked dangerous until Phil was forced off despite being in a beautiful rhythm owing to the ECB fast bowling directives. Chris Freeman took over and produced his best spell of the season and fuly deserved his figures, getting both Cant and C Cook caught by Simon Randall at short cover, the second an absolute beauty. During this inspired speall we had also run out the dangerous Pomeroy, with smart work from ted Edwards.
At 87-5 we were back in yet could not turn the screw as Simon Hare took anchor and was brutal on anything slightly wide although he survived an almighty scare when he was dropped on 0. Chris continued and finally got Birdy to give an LBW to remove Cook sr for an obdurate 20. Skipper Stevenson and Hare edged Wormley closer until Smithers reminding those preset of Jack Russell took off like a swallow to his right to "snag a beauty" from Josh.
It looked all set for a grandstand finish until Stevenson R smashed Josh into Essex and Hare edged them over the line in the penuiltimate over to end a great game of cricket played in a great spirit but witht the wrong result for Radlett.
Thanks to Birdy for umpiring both ends and doing a stirling job and also to Tee Cee for scoring and the ladies for the tea.
