Match report This was a much improved performance in defeat for Radlett 3rds, a game they could have won. The batting and fielding were of the required standard at this level, but we bowled poorly, with wides and no balls gifting the opposition 22 runs and an extra four overs, which proved to be the difference between the sides.

Tim Smithers won the toss and decided to bat on a hot day with a decent looking wicket. The wicket proved to be slow at first,but hardened later. North Enfield bowled well on this surface, and kept the run rate to below 3 an over for the first half of the innings. We lost Matt Soffair, probably our best batsman this season, early on, and after an impressive start, Shamat Nathwani was caught behind. Nick Hampton looked set for a big score when he played over one and was bowled for 34, and when Mike Crocker was smartly stumped, Radlett were 94 for 4 from 31 overs.

Dom Ingram joined Iain Edwards, who was already batting well, and these two put on 85 from 15 overs, running well between the wickets (!) and putting away the bad balls. When Ingram was adjudged lbw for 45, the bowler Gandy, went on to take four wickets in as many balls,and Radlett went from 179 for 4 to 180 for 8. Smithers and Gitay played robustly to take the score past 200 and 10 points. Eddo Edwards top-scored with 58, another excellent innings from him, full of intent and good technique.

204 for 8 from 53 overs was below par but not disastrous, and Smithers opened with the old ball with Nick Hampton's spin and Zed Gitay's wobblers, but without luck, with a couple of catches dropped and other edges not going to hand.

The first wicket fell to the young Phil Simmons who bowled with good pace and does not lack for confidence. Having been comprehensively bowled first ball in the Radlett first innings, he managed to make it seem that it was his idea. When Josh Rose got the second and Simmons the third, the run rate slowed and pressure mounted, Enfield were 90 for 3 and we were in with a chance. The fielding, as we have come to expect, was of a high quality, with Mike Crocker a revelation, he has improved his performance in the field beyond recognition. Matt Soffair, Shamat Nathwani and Josh Rose were also excellent.

But with Mark Gray unable to bowl, or indeed throw, having damaged his shoulder, a powerful spin option was lost to us. But Zed Gitay bowled economically and cleverly to take 3 for 47, and with 8 overs to go, 39 to win and 3 wickets to get, he had got us back in the game. Enfield's captain Jones took his side to victory with two wickets and 3 overs to spare.

Eighteen points was a decent return for the game, but thirty would have been better.
