Radlett CC 3rd XI v Northampton Exiles on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 8 wickets

Match report Radlett 3rd XI's first win of the season was as comprehensive as it was deserved. Remember that Radlett were second to bottom of the division playing the side second to top. Exiles were thoroughly outplayed in all departments.

Exiles won the toss and elected to bat which was a mistake brought about by underconfidence from their poor batting the previous week. In effect it meant that Radlett would get the better batting conditions.

Smithers opened the bowling with Josh Rose and Chris Freeman. They bowled beautifully dismissing the openers cheaply, but three or four hard catching chances were missed, and at 80 for 2 it seemed we might have missed the boat. But the support seam bowlers, Ollie Robertson and Z “The Beaver” Gitay continued the pressure exerted by the openers, and, supported by some really quality fielding, including fine catches from Rose and a genius catch from Shabbir Foyez, Exiles were dismissed for 121.

This constituted, even on a wicket giving some help, a really excellent bowling and fielding performance. Ollie Robertson followed up his inspired batting of last week with a brilliant bowling spell, supported by the wily Beaver bowling with the assurance and guile of old, and cashing in on the pressure built by Freeman and Rose.

Mention must be made of the fielding, which was athletic and committed. Shabbir Foyez is an unsung and underrated player who struggled to get in the 5th XI last season, but (now he has paid his subscription) he is becoming recognised as a whole-hearted team player who can bat and bowl, and fields with talent and guts.

Talking of guts, Nick Ingram wins the champagne moment for putting his future family on the line when his reproductive equipment was relocated to just below the ribs in fearlessly fielding a hard hit stroke. How we laughed as he writhed on the floor, wheezing an octave higher than normal.

The batting was clinical. Dom Ingram, back to a semblance of last season's form, opened with the immensely promising Matt Soffiar. They put on an untroubled 55 in under an hour, and effectively quietened the ebullient Exiles XI. Ingram fell to an injudicious pull for 26, and his brother Nick, after some powerful blows was bowled playing an even less judicious shot for 13.

In came Danesh Yogendra who played without a hitch to see the game home, and victory by 8 wickets. All the while Matt Soffair was playing beautifully, ending with 59 not out, and finishing the match with the third of 3 sumptuous sixes. This was some innings from the 17 year old, who made the rest of us look ordinary.

A satisfying win, well earned, and Tim Smithers deserves to wear the smile of the man who has skilfully steered, coerced and encouraged his side to what is the first of what will surely be many such victories this season.
