Old Elizabethans v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 19 May 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
This was a disappointing defeat for Radlett 3rds playing away against a side that with a bit of luck they would beat.
O.E.s did have the luck, batting in the second half in much the better batting conditions, but they made their own luck which Radlett didn't.
The home team won the toss and promptly opted to bowl. The wicket was damp and sticky and scoring was difficult, so to have reached 161 for 7 was not a bad effort. But most of the Radlett batsmen got themselves out against some steady rather than penetrative bowling.
Simon Randall again was the cornerstone of the innings with a patient and technically excellent unbeaten 50, and the only other substantial contribution being from Nick Ingram's comparatively belligerent 25. Silva, Gitay and Ollie Robertson got into double figures quickly, but failed to convert that into a significant total.
Still, 161 seemed reasonable. That is, until we bowled at them.
Opening with spin was in retrospect a mistake for two reasons. Firstly, the wicket and outfield had dried out, and secondly, we bowled badly. Thus, 40 of our hard-earned runs and a quarter of the required target were wiped out in the first 6 of the 47 overs.
However, when Josh Rose took the new ball with Neil Lederman, the game completely changed. Lederman's first over was a revelation. He bowled beautifully his left-arm medium-fast shaping away from the batsman and was rewarded by the first wicket caught in the slips.
Rose, always threatening, then brought one back to bowl the number 3, and when he completed a genius caught and bowled one handed with his Inspect Gadget extended arm, Radlett had taken 3 wickets for 20 runs in 10 overs, and were in the game.
Even at 112 for 5 Radlett were in with a chance, but O.E.s knocked off the remaining runs with just one over and five wickets remaining.
O.E.s batsmen rode their luck, and did have the better conditions, but Radlett will play much better sides than this, and must make the opposition work harder if they are to make any impression in this division.
