Match report
Radlett 2s rounded off the season with a “winning draw” against relegated Broxbourne, the 18 points gained leaving them in a solid mid-table position.
With nothing but pride resting on this match against relegated Broxbourne, Amjad Khan won the toss and decided to give his lower-order batsmen an opportunity to shine at the crease. Keeper Colin Warne therefore opened the batting with Jim Chaudry, the pair producing the second highest opening partnership (58) of the season, before Warne thin-edged a drive to the keeper for a stylish 18.
Graeme Dill and Chaudry took the score to 109, before the latter was bowled for a fine, aggressive 66. With the score on 131 after 33 overs, the impatient Dill lofted a catch to mid-on to instigate the customary collapse. Normal nr.11 Shabbir Foyez blew his big chance by lobbing his first ball to mid-off and the sound-looking Rob Watson (10) chipped a catch to square leg. When fellow tail-ender Heath Paynter lofted a catch on 0 and Mike Crosker was caught for just 4, the innings looked in a sorry state at 143-7.
Once again, it was left to the tail – this time manned by front-line batsmen - to get the score to a competitive level. Usual opener Ashley Tillett (27) played fluently from the off and with Ahmed Nawab (26) took the score quickly to 185 before holing out in the deep in the 49th over. Nawab, Dave Robinson and skipper Khan then took the score to 202 all out – a good total on a ground with a slow outfield.
Taking the old ball, off-spinners Chaudry and Nawab kept a tight grip on the Broxbourne openers, who scored at under three an over. When the first wicket finally fell, with the score on 75, the rate needed had climbed to six an over, but with wickets in hand there was still all to play for.
Skipper Khan gambled on taking the new ball and saw immediate results as both Robbie Watson and Heath Paynter bowled well. Paynter (12-2-42-5) proved especially effective, ending with five wickets as the Broxbourne batters sought to up the pace. When the eighth wicket fell with just three overs left, Broxbourne bowed to the inevitable and played out the draw, finishing on 164-8.
So Radlett finish in 10th position, following a disjointed season that saw them lose nearly a third of the games to the weather. They will have been pleased to have been so comfortable in the division, following last season’s promotion, but will reflect on the fact that inconsistent batting was the major weakness, missing several opportunities to chase gettable totals. All in all, though, a satisfactory season.
