Radlett CC 2nd XI v Northchurch on Sat 01 Sep 2007 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Radlett 2s top order once again failed to perform as a unit, as the team went down to only their second defeat of the season, against relegation-threatened Northchurch. Indeed, it was only thanks to a fine rearguard action, led by skipper Amjad Khan, that Radlett were able to post a total of 188 and take what turned out to be an exciting match to the penultimate over.

Indeed, with Northchurch themselves sinking to 139-6 with just 8 overs left, after a good start, Radlett suddenly looked favourites to achieve a remarkable turnaround, before a fine 7th wicket partnership of 48 took the visitors to victory.

Radlett batted first after winning the toss and were quickly reduced to 21-3 in the 7th over, with Graeme Dill lbw for 4, Ashley Tillett caught for 13, off his now customary skied drive, and Simon Gray beaten by a good off-cutter for 0.

Jim Chaudry and Ahmed Nawab cautiously rebuilt the innings, adding 63 together in 19 overs, before Nawab was brilliantly caught and bowled off a fierce drive. Cue the next collapse, as the umpire finally heeded one of dozens of Northchurch appeals to give Chaudry out lbw for 21 and Dave Robinson played on for just 1.

At 85-6, with 29 overs gone, things were looking desperate, but skipper Khan and young Rob Watson looked in little difficulty as they carefully built a key partnership of 52 runs in 17 overs. Indeed, it was only a brilliant direct hit, as Watson tried to scramble a quick single, that saw his demise with the score on 137. Heath Paynter continued the good work, adding 21 out of a partnership of 39 to take the score to 176-9, leaving Khan (47*) and keeper Warne to eke out a further 12 runs from the remaining few deliveries.

Northchurch looked comfortable scoring at three an over, but Watson completed a good opening spell of 6-1-11-1 by getting opener Cocks lbw with the score on 30. The experiment of introducing spinner Gray was terminated after one poor over costing eleven runs, but medium-pacer Dill immediately looked threatening and in his second over induced a catch behind, with the score on 52.

Dill and Chaudry bowled tidily, but the visitor’s third wicket pair batted steadily to add 42 and appeared to be taking the match away from Radlett. However, four wickets then fell for 45 runs off the next 11 overs, as Dill and Watson claimed two victims each, courtesy of three fine catches and a superb Dill off-cutter that cleaned up nr 4 Hayes.

Radlett now looked favourites, but Northchurch’s seventh wicket pair rode their luck as several lofted drives fell perilously close to the deep-set fielders. As the tension mounted, full toll was taken of several wayward deliveries and Paynter’s dismissal of top-scorer Fantham (35) came too late to change the result.
