Radlett CC 2nd XI v Old Finchelians on Sat 18 Aug 2007 at 1.00 p.m.
Match was Abandoned

Match report A game that was bubbling nicely towards a grand finale, went the way of
so many other games during this rain-sodden and miserable season. The
downpour at approximately 5pm led the players off the field to never return with
the game ending at a stalemate with Old Finchleians tottering at 40-2.

The day had begun promisingly and with the forecast looking uncertain,
stand-in skipper David Robinson won the toss and duly decided to make
first use of a third-day pitch. The fact that the team was informed 5 mins
before the scheduled start did not seem to faze them too much!! The wicket was
the same one as used for the previous week's Middlesex II's game and looked
a belter. With RCC winning three games bowling second the decision seemed
a very sensible one.

RCC's opening batsmen Jim Chaudry and Graham Dill strode out under cloudy skies.
OF's bowling attack was extremely useful. The ball was nipping around at pace
and the openers negociated the first 10 overs with consummate skill and
determination. With one of the RCC's team deciding that moving house was
more important than playing cricket (!), and with a young and
inexperienced team it was imperative to negotiate the first 10 overs.

Dill began to play a more expansive game and a number of excellent
"big-shots" ensued. The greater risk resulted in some dropped catches by
the otherwise excellent OF fielders. Chaudry continued in an unexpected
"block" mode.

As RCC move to 70-0 off 18 overs the scene was set for a major push
towards a large team total. Unfortunately, another big shot from Dill resulted
in a lost ball. The substitute ball, which was being used by a local
dog-walker, proved to change the course of the game. With lavish
swing and seam movement forthcoming the OF skipper decided against a bowling
change and let his seamers continue. The RCC openers began to re-start
their innings 20 overs into the game.

With the score on 84 after 26 overs Dill played one expansive shot too many and was clean-bowled for an excellent 65 by the excellent OF opening bowler. This brought last week's star performer to the crease the one and only
Simon Gray. However, as their was no full-moon, "Silla" clearly
decided that today was not a good day to bat... He duly followed for a
disappointing one run.

This led to a rush of wickets tumbling and RCC found themselves
precariously placed at 105-6. However, an excellent repair job was
undertaken by Prabs Arumagan and Rob Watson. Both played superbly for
excellent thirties. Enabling RCC to reach an unlikely 172-8 after 53
overs.

Given RCC's ability to bowl sides out with pressure applied in the
second innings their was definitely the feeling of "game on". RCC opened up with the ever-reliable Heath Paynter and the excellent Rob Watson. Watson in particular caught the eye with his opening spell. He bowled with real pace and aggression and his two wickets were very well-deserved. With Mike Crocker taking two excellent catches behind the stumps, RCC felt that there was a game for the taking.

However, the rain came again leaving RCC with a sixth wash-out. The
season has been blighted by the weather which has led to RCC remaining in
mid-table.
