Reed v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 11 Aug 2007 at 1.00 p.m.
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett 2s again failed to chase down a demanding, but gettable total - this time against top-of-the table Reed. Chasing 235-6 dec, Radlett were well paced at 66-1 after 18 overs, but then lost three prime wickets in just 16 balls. The need to rebuild the innings cost the side vital momentum, leaving the lower order batsman too much to do. Radlett gave up the chase after losing their 6th, 7th and 8th wickets in the 43rd, 44th and 45th overs respectively.

Reed elected to bat on a hot afternoon and opener Curtis showed his intentions by thrashing at anything remotely wide, getting off the mark with a 6 and taking 14 off Rob Watson’s opening over. The mayhem continued, with 71 coming off the first ten overs, aided by some lacklustre fielding. The introduction of first Heath Paynter and then Jim Chaudry slowed the rate, to the extent that just 18 runs came from the next 8 overs. The ever-accurate Paynter then broke the 93-run opening partnership in the 19th over and six overs later snared his second lbw victim with the score on 106.

The scoring rate remained sluggish, advancing to just 118 in the 29th over when Paynter struck again. Radlett now had things firmly back under control, with the 4th wicket pair struggling to make headway against tight bowling. The next 11 overs saw just 28 runs scored, but with wickets in hand Reed pressed the accelerator, adding 89 runs in the last 12 overs for the loss of just three more wickets, declaring one over early with the score on 235-6.

The wicket had posed few problems and, with 11 capable batsmen in the team, Radlett were up for the challenge. A misunderstanding saw Ashley Tillett run out for 8 in the 3rd over, but Mitz Chokski and Simon Gray were in little trouble, with Gray in particular showing exquisite timing. Chokski then played round a straight one to be plumb lbw, with the score on 67 in the 19th over. Two balls later Graham Dill edged an expansive drive to the keeper and within two further overs 67-3 had become 72-4 as Ahmed Nawab lofted a shot to cover.

David Robinson joined Simon Gray, but the need to rebuild the innings saw the run-rate began to climb. The need for quick singles saw Gray run out by a direct hit for a classy 78 and, with the rate required now at 7-an-over, things were looking increasingly difficult. Nr.7 Chaudry allowed himself a few sighters, then took 19 runs off the 43rd over, before being bowled for 21. Big-hitting Heath Paynter was promoted from nr 11, but fell third ball for just 2, with the score on 198, followed immediately by Dave Robinson, caught lofting an on-drive one short of his 50. With just three overs remaining, Rob Watson and skipper Amjad Khan shut up shop, but Khan fell lbw to the first ball of the final over, trying to secure the 2 runs needed for the final batting point, leaving keeper Colin Warne to see out the draw surrounded by every Reed fielder.
