Match report Wacko Jacko Smashes Radlett to Victory

A typical bludgeoning innings from all-rounder Simon Jackson steered Radlett 2s to victory at fifth-placed Ampthill Town. Entering the fray in the 21st over, with Radlett precariously placed at 70-5, chasing 182, Wacko Jacko smashed 77 off just 39 deliveries, including six 6s, to see his side home with 14 overs to spare.

Earlier, tight bowling and good fielding had restricted high-riding Ampthill to a modest total, after skipper Amjad Khan had inserted them on what turned out to be a slow, low wicket. Star of the bowling show was the ever-reliable Heath Paynter, who took 6-47 off a marathon 19.1 overs. Coming on in the 6th over, after young opening bowler Robbie Watson had struggled to cope running into the blustery wind, Paynter immediately applied pressure with four maidens on the trot. With Jackson also bowling well at the other end, Ampthill crawled along at three an over, until the returning Watson, with the wind now at his back, induced opener Morrall (49) to drive one straight to Ashley Tillett with the score on 73 in the 23rd over.

Watson struck again in his next over, removing the slow-scoring Deganan for 20. By now, off-spinner Ahmed Nawab had replaced the wicket-less Paynter. Immediately settling into a good line and length, it was a surprise when nr 3 batsman Gould suddenly smashed him for three sixes in a row, to take the score racing on to 108 off 28 overs. The pyrotechnics were short-lived, however, as the two Ampthill batsmen found themselves at the same end arguing over the merits of a second run to fine-leg, whilst Ashley Tillett threw the ball to the vacant bowler’s end to secure the run out.

The returning Paynter now induced dangerman Gould to edge one to keeper Colin Warne, with the score on 123. A fifth-wicket partnership of 22 looked to be re-building the innings, but Nawab, bowling his most controlled spell of the season, snared a caught-and-bowled, to leave Ampthill on 145-5. Ten overs later the innings had ended, as Paynter swept through the lower order, taking 5 wickets for 8 runs, including three “clean bowled”.

Radlett’s inconsistent top order once again conspired to make what looked a straight-forward task difficult. Opener Rob Smith bottom-edged one to the keeper for 0, but Ashley Tillett and Nick Fielden took the score along at four an over, until Fielden (21) was brilliantly caught at slip to pay for his first mistake. Cue the collapse, as 49-2 became 70-5, as Dave Robinson (5) edged a drive onto his stumps, Mitz Chokski (4)was stuck on the crease lbw and one of Tillett’s (35) frequent edges finally found an Ampthill hand.

Enter Jackson, armed with his railway-sleeper of a bat. Hitting five of his first 14 balls for 6, Jackson scattered the fielders to all parts and had the scoreboard in chaos. With Nawab keeping him company, the tension in the Radlett dressing room soon dissipated as the target shrunk rapidly. The unbroken partnership of 113 took just 13 overs to give Radlett a well-deserved, and eventually comfortable, victory.
