Radlett CC 2nd XI v Cockfosters on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Match was Abandoned
Match report
Heavy rain once again curtailed Radlett 2's match, though this time the balance of advantage lay with opponents Cockfosters, who had already knocked off 33 of the 181 runs required in just 4.3 overs.
That Radlett had not already lost the match was due to their tail once again adding vital runs after another failure by the misfiring top order. Fine aggressive batting by Heath Paynter (45), who added 34 for the 9th wicket in partnership with Ollie Robertson (18), and 33 for the last wicket with Mark Gray (8*), prolonged the match and gave Radlett something to bowl at.
Skipper Khan had won the toss and decided to bat on a rock hard pitch that looked to be full of runs. All was well until Mitz Chokski (10) played round a straight ball to be plumb lbw with the score on 27. Wickets fell regularly afterwards.
Ahmed Nawab and Dave Robinson now began a rebuilding exercise, with both looking secure until Robinson unaccountably played round one to be bowled for 35, with the score on 72-4. A golden duck for skipper Khan, followed swiftly by the demise of Nawab, out caught, saw Radlett in desperate straits at 84-6.
Rob Watson and keeper Colin Warne appeared to be in little difficulty and had added 20 before Warne was given out lbw, sweeping, for 5. Nine runs later, Watson was out caught, drilling one back to the bowler for a stylish 22 leaving Radlett on 113-8.
With 15 overs still to go, it was important to bat as long as possible, a task carried out with gusto by Paynter and Robertson, who both decided attack was the best form of defence, adding their 34 runs in just 6 overs. Following Robertson’s dismissal, out caught with the score on 147, Mark Gray continued to give Paynter strong support and the pair consumed a further vital nine overs and added 33, to take the score to 180, before Paynter was caught in the deep launching another big hit.
Perhaps motivated by the threat of rain, second-in-the-table Cockfosters set about opening bowler Watson with a series of fine drives and had taken the score to 27 after just 3.3 overs when Paynter induced a leading edge for Mark Gray to take a fine diving catch at point. The skies then darkened and distant lightning signaled the impending downpour that ended the match.
