Radlett CC 2nd XI v Old Albanians on Sat 09 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 2 runs
Match report
Two wickets in the very last over saw Radlett II snatch a dramatic two-run victory over Old Albanians 1st XI at Cobden Hill. In a match that ebbed and flowed excitingly, both sides had chances to win the game, but in the end it was excellent bowling by Heath Paynter and Jim Chaudry and fine fielding by keeper Colin Warne and outfielder Mike Crocker that turned the match.
Winning the toss and choosing to bat, Radlett raced to 26 off 4 overs before Rob Smith became the first of three lbw decisions that also saw Chaudry and Robinson go cheaply. Ashley Tillett had also departed, after striking a typically aggressive 35, leaving Radlett looking in trouble at 64-4. Ahmed Nawab and Mike Crocker took the score on to 100-5, but Crocker was struggling to score and was run out for 8 taking a tight single.
The match was now in the balance, but a fine partnership of 78 between Nawab and skipper Amjad Khan steadied the ship, before Khan fell for a vital 34 in the 45th over. Radlett were now well placed for a final assault, but 178-6 became 190-9 as Nawab fell immediately for a fine 77, followed swiftly by Watson and Paynter. It was vital now that Radlett used up the remaining overs and eeked out as many runs as possible, a mission duly completed by keeper Warne with a run-a-ball 19* in partnership with the sound-looking Nathan Jaganathan.
Radlett had fallen short of the targeted 240, but this 21-run last-wicket partnership had at least taken the score to a respectable level and was to prove decisive in the end.
Indeed, 212 looked a long way off for OAs when first Jaganathan then Rob Watson struck with fine swinging deliveries to leave them reeling on 3-2. Skipper Dale and ex-Radlett all-rounder Johnathan Smithers were now at the wicket and were looking dangerous, until Heath Paynter induced an edge to the keeper in his first over. Advantage Radlett.
Smithers was looking determined to make a big score on his old stamping ground and, in partnership with the less elegant Wood, looked to be taking the match away from Radlett, taking full toll of some wayward bowling by off-spinner Nawab. However, Jim Chaudry had come on to bowl two tight overs and, in his third over, beat the bat for Warne to make a smart stumping as Smithers lost his balance after making an excellent 68.
With OAs on 119-4 with 17 overs left, Radlett felt the game was again theirs for the taking. Chaudry struck again in 34th and 36th oves and, when Mike Crocker took a superb one-handed catch low down at square leg off the same bowler, victory looked in prospect with OAs on 172-7 and just 7 overs left. OAs were not finished yet, however, and the match turned again as the eighth wicket pair took full toll of some loose deliveries from the returning Nawab and Watson. Just 13 runs were now needed off three overs.
Skipper Khan had been switching bowlers frequently to try and secure the break-through and now turned to Paynter. 5 runs were conceded off his first four deliveries, but Warne then pulled off another fine stumping to leave OAs needing 8 off two overs. Chaudry completed an excellent spell of 4-37 off 11 overs by conceding just 3 runs off his last over, but with 2 wickets remaining OAs still looked favourites as Paynter took the ball for the last time.
Two runs came off the first ball, but a wild swing by Preest saw him clean bowled for 18. Three needed off four deliveries. A further dot ball then massive relief as Paynter (4-27 off 9.4 overs) rapped nr.11 Hussey on the pads to secure a dramatic victory.
