Knebworth Park II v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 1.30 p.m.
Match was Drawn

Match report With Knebworth Park II posting a massive 312-3 dec off just 46.4 overs, this was not so much a case of the wheels dropping off the Radlett wagon as never being on in the first place. Indeed, the first set of wheels, in the form of opening bowler Nathan Jaganathan’s car, failed to turn up to the ground until half an hour after the match had started, forcing skipper Amjad Khan to ask part-time pace bowler Simon Gray to partner Heath Paynter with the new ball.

With 21 runs coming off Gray’s two overs, Khan turned to the spin of Ahmed Nawab. His second delivery turned sharply to beat opener Turner through the gate, miss leg stump and defeat keeper Colin Warne. This was to be an expensive miss, as Knebworth’s Aussie star offered just one further chance, edging one onto the end of Jim Chaudry’s toe on 67, before eventually holing out in the deep for a classy 164 !

Radlett failed to help their cause by bowling a series of bad balls, despatched at regular intervals for 4 or 6 – indeed, there were nine of the latter. Just one maiden was bowled, by the the excellent Heath Paynter, who was the only bowler to go for less than four an over. It was 37 overs before Radlett secured their first wicket, by which time the openers had put on 226 and put the game out of reach. The dismissal of Turner brought the declaration, Knebworth giving themselves 53 overs with which to dismiss Radlett.

Openers Warne and Tillett took 17 off the first four overs of spin, before Warne was beaten through the gate. Tillett decided that attack, in the form of the lofted drive, was the best tactic and was scoring at a run a ball, but lost the struggling Gray with the score on 41. Tillett (29) perished, caught at mid-off immediately afterwards, followed just 6 runs later by Mitz Chokski. Chaudry and Nawab settled things down with a fifth wicker partnership of 55 off 11 overs, before Chaudry was well caught in front of the site screen, ending any remaining hopes of an unlikely victory.

Nawab and Mike Crocker batted comfortably, prompting Knebworth to finally take the new ball in the 34th over, to good effect, with Nawab spooning the second over down to fine leg and Crocker edging one to the keeper next over. Radlett were now in a parlous state at 137-7, with 17 overs still to go, but had experience at the crease in the form of Dave Robinson and skipper Khan. Both played delightfully, seeing off the new ball, the returning opening spinners and final attempts to buy their wickets with flighted leg-spin. Khan in particular was in fine attacking form, striking thirteen 4s in his 62 not out, the pair adding exactly 100 to deny Knebworth victory.
