Match report Nawab nabs 6 on debut

Sluggish ground-fielding, a surfeit of no-balls (11) and failure to keep the scoreboard ticking over early in their innings were the main reasons newly-promoted Radlett 2nds failed to get more than a draw – and just 8 points - against Flitwick’s first team, in the opening Saracens League Division 2 encounter.

The riverside location of Flitwick’s excellent ground presented a marked contrast to the parched fields of Cobden Hill and skipper Dave Robinson decided to make the most of the green-tinged pitch and overcast conditions by inserting the opposition. Heath Paynter immediately found steepling bounce, with the opener top-edging two lucky fours. The other end presented a complete contrast, with the ball keeping low.

Despite the alarms, Flitwick built an opening partnership of 77, broken only by a fine, one-handed diving catch at mid-wicket by Robinson to give debutant off-spinner Ahmed Nawab his first League wicket. 23-year-old Nawab joins Radlett from South African side Gauteng and brings with him a first class average of 33 wickets at an average of 27. Coming on in the 11th over, Nawab wheeled away unchanged until the end, finishing with impressive figures of 6 for 71 off 22 overs.

Flitwick built on their good start, but when 3 wickets fell for 8 runs, to leave them at 172 for 6 in the 43rd over, Radlett fancied their chances of keeping the score below 200. A few overs of consolidation, however, followed by judicious hitting saw the score mount to 235 for 8, presenting a formidable target. However, the sun was now out and the slow outfield had speeded up. Moreover, with Oz Edwards at 10, this is a long batting line-up.

Fresh from last week’s first-ever ton, young Ashley Tillett survived an early shout for caught-behind to get the innings off to a good start, with 24 runs taken from the first 5 overs. The next 5 saw just one single, however, with Mitz Chokski struggling to get the ball away. Aiming to break the stranglehold, Chokski lofted one to “cow corner”, departing for just 4 from 30 deliveries. Three overs later, skipper Robinson fell lbw to spinner Moses, leaving Radlett at 32-2 off 12 overs. Simon Gray and Tillett more than doubled the score, but 21 overs had now passed when Gray smashed one high to gulley.

165 off 26 overs was now looking a distant possibility, as Mike Crocker looked to play himself in. Ashley Tillett was getting on with it, however, and had reached a fine 60 when he was clean bowled with the score on 103. Time now for some hitting. After failing to locate the bat with his early swipes, Nick Tune finally started connecting and took 21 off 29 deliveries. Mike Crocker had meanwhile departed for 24 off 44 deliveries, to make way for big-hitting Heath Paynter. Tune went immediately, followed three balls later by Nawab for a debut duck, leaving Radlett at a parlous 141-7, with 8 overs still to go.

Time now to focus on getting as many batting points as possible. The clean-hitting Paynter struck 20 off just 14 deliveries, adding 35 with keeper Colin Warne in 4 overs, before holing out in the covers. It was important now not to lose another wicket, but Oz Edwards (13*) and Warne (25*) kept the scoreboard going to add 21 in the last 4 overs, with Edwards exhibiting two classy off –drives and Warne lofting the last ball so high off a thick edge that the veteran pair were able to scamper the two runs necessary for maximum batting points before the ball had landed.
