Match report Sommers UK HCPL

Radlett 247 all out
Farnham Royal 62 all out

Radlett won by 185 runs

A remarkable turnaround in this match saw Radlett romp to a memorable victory with a superb comeback from an extremely precarious position, in so doing consolidating 3rd place in the Sommers UK HCPL. When Mohammed Amin dismissed Haydn Smith to leave Radlett 90-6 shortly after lunch it was hard to imagine that the Cobden Hill outfit would be celebrating their fourth win of the season just 4 hours later. That they did was thanks to a magnficent century by Shane Burger and superb spells of bowling by pace man Gareth Berg and veteran medium pacer Stuart Browne.

Put into bat in testing early morning conditions after heavy rain during the week had hampered pitch preparation, openers Matt Evans and Kabir Toor battled hard and did extremely well to post another half century opening stand to see of the dangerous new ball spell of Jamaican left arm speedster Krishmar Santokie. Toor had played in confident fashion easing his way to 32 before being undone by a ball that stopped on him to chip a return catch to Dahron Pitt. That wicket fell on 56, and some 50 minutes later Radlett had collapsed to 72-5, as Pitt claimed all 5 victims with his left arm seamers as Evans (18), Rob Smith, Gareth Berg and Tom Jenkins all succumbed.

Amidst the carnage, Burger stood firm to play a crucial innings for his team, as he has done on several occassions this season. When Haydn Smith was yorked just after lunch, Burger was joined by James Lewis and the pair took the positive approcah in trying to get their team out of trouble. Lewis played some fine shots to grab the initiative at a crucial stage and his counter attacking innings of 28 was absolutely vital in the match context. Their 63 run partnership ended when Lewis was adjudged LBW to Naved Zaigham, but that was not the end of the Radlett recovery as skipper Dan Chippeck dropped anchor at one end whilst Burger continued his inexorable march to his third HCPL ton of the season. This was a sensational innings under pressure, his team in real trouble, yet at all times the bad ball was still being punished unerringly, whilst he was patient enough to settle for singles once the field was set deep. Excuding authority at the crease, Burger's 127 led his team past the 200 mark and on to a match winning total of 247, his partnership with Chippeck (18) worth 85 crucial runs as Farnham Royal saw a mediocre chase and a winning position being turned into a formidable total and a battle for survival.

With momentum firmly behind them, Radlett wasted no time setting about Royal's top order, as Gareth Berg and Stuart Browne went to work. Berg struck first when he completely deceived Dan Simpson, before Browne dismissed Olly Clayson thanks to a stunning diving catch by Rob Crocker. Berg then struck a crucial double blow with the score on 20, as skipper Warren Miller was caught by keeper Tom Jenkins off an attempted pull, followed first ball by Santokie who was beaten for pace by a rapid in swinging yorker.

With Royal on the ropes at 29-4, Browne provided the knock out blow with 3 wickets in an over, as Shaw fell to a brilliant low one handed catch in the gully by Toor, Ranger edged to Berg at slip, and Sandford was caught of a leading edge. Javed Khan stood alone with a valiant 24 before he drove Browne to Burger at mid off. Thereafter Berg wrapped things up in quick time with the final 2 wickets both courtesy of Jenkins catches to finish wih 5-21, Browne claiming 5-28, both bowlers being backed up by a faultless display of catching, Farnham Royal dismissed for 62.

Skipper Dan Chippeck was delighted with his sides comeback:" To win this game by such a margin from the position we were in shows the strength in depth of this team and its character and determination to fight all the way. James Lewis typified that by playing positively under pressure which really kick started the turn around. However, without Shane's 127 we would have really struggled, his innings was simply a magnificent premier league hundred when it mattered, and in the field and with the ball we were in no mood to let his efforts go to waste. Gareth and Stuart bowled superbly as they have done for much of the season, and were backed up by a sensational effort in the field."

Radlett remained in 3rd place as both Slough and Oxford beat High Wycombe and Falkland respectively, and thus with just 2 games remaining the Cobden Hill outfit have only an outside chance of lifting the title for the first time as they trail Slough by 26 points, though they remain on course for the clubs best ever finish in HCPL cricket. Next up is the trip to Falkland before Oxford visit on the final weekend for what could be a vital clash.
