Match report
Sommmers UK HCPL
High Wycombe 174 all out
Radlett did not bat
Match abandoned as a draw
The appalling weather that has been an omnipotent presence throughout the summmer of 2007 struck at High Wycombe to deny Radlett a chance to ram home their advantage that they had worked hard to gain during the first half of this match.
To dismiss as a strong a batting side as High Wycombe on their own ground for just 174 was a fine effort from the bowlers, who responded to the slow low pitch to produce a display of accuracy and skill. It was Shane Burger, who showed once again what a threat he is with the new ball now fully fit, that got the ball rolling with 3 quick wickets as Jones was bowled shouldering arms to a ball that swung late, Springer clean bowled by a superb off cutter, and importantly skipper and stalwart Greg Pooley, who edged a sharply lifting delivery through to keeper Tom Jenkins.
Having opened the bowling into a stiff breeze, Gareth Berg then switched ends to follow Burger downwind and he matched his fellow strike bowler collecting 3 wickets, as Sawyer was superbly held at gully by Haydn Smith, ex-Sussex and Notts pro Keith Newell caught and bowled, and Watkins bowled by a rapid inswinging yorker. At 73-6, it looked like another quick finsih was on the cards, but Robinson (45) and Sketchley (35) battled hard either side of lunch, playing positively and with purpose to add 69 for the 7th wicket to give the scoreboard an air of respectability.
Haydn Smith's slow left arm finally got the breakthrough as Jenkins held a smart catch off a bottom edged cut to see the back of Sketchley, before spin twin Rob Crocker claimed Robinson to a top edged sweep. Smith then wrapped up the innings taking 2 further wickets to finish with figures of 3-10 as High Wycombe were dismissed for 174. Berg finished with figures of 3-52, Burger 3-35, Crocker 1-13, whilst Browne toiled manfully into the wind for 16 accurate overs without any luck.
During the change of innings the rain set in, and as the gloom descended, more akin to November than August, the match was finally abandoned at 5pm. With none of the other HCPL fixtures being played to a conclusion, Radlett remain in 3rd place, with 3 games remaining, and will welcome Farnham Royal to Cobden Hill next Saturday.
