Radlett's long unbeaten run in the Sommers UK HCPL dating back to May went up in smoke as they were beaten by a resurgent Henley at the picturesque Oratory School ground. With Henley's home ground still unfit for duty after recent flooding, this was a fine replacement venue with an immaculately manicured outfield and superb views stretching out over the Thames valley. At long last, summer obliged with a glorious day, and with a bone dry and somewhat dusty pitch being presented to the captains, it was Radlett's Dan Chippeck who won the toss and decided to bat first.

Matt Evans and Kabir Toor started brightly , both men finding the boundary through the legside in the opening overs, but Tom Lambert struck early to remove Evans, tidiliy caught at slip. Steve Lowe should have followed in similar fashion off the bowling of Hampshire's David Griffiths but the chance was floored, and with Toor settling in the score passed 50 without further loss.

However, the introduction of Adrian Greyvenstein's medium pace turned the game decisively in Henley's favour, the bowling change producing immediate results as Toor (23) chipped his first ball to mid on. In Greyvensteins next over, Lowe (24) was extremely unfortunate to be adjudged lbw, followed next ball by Gareth Berg given out caught behind off inside edge and pad. When Tom Jenkins was bowled and Haydn Smith superbly held by keeper Todd Ferguson both to Greyvensteins bowling, Radlett had slumped from 53-1 to 92-6, and Greyvenstein had bagged a rapid 5 for.

Amidst the carnage, Shane Burger was playing with his customary assurance, looking untroubled by and large, and he was joined by James Lewis. The pair added 42 either side of lunch before Lewis (17) fell victim to Bjorn Mordt's medium pace. Chippeck joined Burger and the pair dug in to steady the innings and attempt to build some sort of total. grafting hard against spin and seam, the pair patiently built a valuable partnership, largely eschewing risk and taking the ones and twos as scoring became tougher as the pitch wore and the ball got older. With the score on 181, Burger (68) was adjudged lbw to a sharply turning Paul Carter off break, before Lambert returned to the attack to bowl Chippeck (24) as the skipper sought to push the score past 200. Rob Crocker got his side to a third batting point, before Stuart Browne became Carter's second lbw victim to wrap up the innings in the 60th over.

Henley's openers Michael Roberts and Chris Ellison began in very circumspect fashion, determined to see off the opening stints of Berg and Browne. It was slow going to the extent that the opening 15 overs yielded just 18 runs and several close shaves for the batsmen. It was the introduction of Rob Crocker's off spin that finally got the break through, Ellison (15) looking to drive and playing on, soon follwed by Roberts caught at silly point by Lowe. When Greyvenstein was dismissed on the stroke of tea, bowled by the persevering Browne, Henley were struggling at 48-3 off 28 overs.

Browne followed up after tea with Mordt's wicket, caught by keeper Jenkins, to bring Carter to the crease. He survived a straight forward chance to mid wicket second ball, but thereafter played positively and ran hard. Middlesex youngster Dan Housego meanwhile had dropped anchor and was patiently building his innings, but he was undone by a superb off break from Crocker that bowled him through the gate for 26 to leave the score 102-5. With 20 overs remaining Radlett appeared to have the upper hand, but Ferguson joined Carter for the decisive partnership. Riding their luck, but unwilling to be dictated to by the bowlers, they managed to break the stranglehold exerted by Browne and Crocker, and chipped away at the required target until 48 was required off the final 10 overs.

By the time Ferguson fell, bowled by Smith for an invaluable 41, just 28 was required, and when Carter and White struck the third last over for 14, Henley were almost home. Fittingly enough, Carter struck the winning runs with just 5 balls to spare to finish with a superb match winning innings of 69 not out.

Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck commented:" We showed our strength in depth in our batting with a tremendous recovery after lunch, but there was some sloppy batting that put us in that position and it was only Shane Burger who really applied himself to the task and showed the neccessary patience. Losing 5 top batsmen in quick succession has been unlike us this season. We didnt have much luck during the day, but we all felt 200 was a pretty good score on a wearing pitch, and we had our chances in the field when we were well on top. Our bowlers, especially Stuart Browne and Rob Crocker did a fine job, and it was an excellent innings by Paul Carter that won them the game for which he should be congratulated."

With top to bottom seperated by just 59 points and Radlett sitting in 4th place, 24 pts behind leaders Slough, there is much still to play for, and Radlett will be looking to bounce back into the title picture when they welcome Finchampstead to Cobden Hill this Saturday.
