Match report On Saturday, the season began with a visit from Welwyn , whom Radlett narrowly pipped to the HCPL Division 2 East title last season. Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck won the toss and elected to give his batsmen first chance to gain some invaluable practice. However only the captain himself with 28 , Shane Burger (46) and newcomer Gareth Berg (26) really took advantage as a somewhat stumbling innings ground to 174-8 off the allotted 45 overs. Despite the unusually dry April conditions, it still appeared to be very much a typical early season re-adjustment process for all the batsmen, but given the quality of the opposing attack featuring former Middlesex seamers Aran Laraman and Jamie Hewitt, and Hertfordshire stalwarts Simon White and Ben Frazer it was nonetheless an extremely valuable work out.

In reply, Welwyn's batsmen also struggled to get the ball away, as Stuart Browne began the season where he left off in 2006 with a miserly 9 over spell conceding just 13 runs and taking 2 wickets in the process. Gareth Berg bowled a lively opening spell from the other end, whilst young spinners James Lewis and Rob Crocker did a tidy containing job as Laraman and Ballard formed a steady third wicket partnership that put their team in a winning position. However, the persistent Lewis picked up Ballards wicket with the score on 112 and Laraman shortly after to turn the game and complete a strong all round performance. Thereafter wickets fell steadily as the returning Berg and Graham Dill turned in fine spells at the death to limit Welwyn to just 37 runs from the final 10 overs of the innings to fall short of the required total on 170-8, Berg finishing with figures of 3-28, an excellent start on his debut for Radlett.
