Farnham Royal v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 11:00
Radlett CC Won By 3 wickets
Match report
Farnham Royal CC 58 all out
Radlett CC 59-7
Radlett won by 3 wkts
The picturesque Rectory Field in Farnham Royal hosted an extraordinary Sommers UK HCPL fixture as 17 wickets tumbled inside 41 overs and the match was done and dusted by 2.20pm. Visitors Radlett were on the right side of the result, registering their second win of the season, and on a day when other matches were rain affected, the 25 points they took catapulted them up from 7th to 2nd in the top division.
Presented with an understandably damp pitch after heavy recent rainfall, Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck won an important toss and had no hesitation in deciding to bowl first, and his three frontline seam bowlers Gareth Berg, Stuart Browne and Shane Burger duly obliged, keeping an impeccable off stump line and full length to take full advantage of the conditions with some outstanding swing and seam bowling. Farnham Royal's top order were never allowed to settle, and after Berg had a huge appeal for lbw turned down from the first ball of the game, he struck in his next over as Alex Ranger edged an attempted drive and was caught by Chippeck at slip via Burger's parry. Browne had already beaten the bat on several occassions, and it was not long before he was amongst the wickets, claiming vital scalps with successive deliveries as Jamaican all rounder Krishmar Santokie and skipper Warren Miller fell to excellent catches by debutant Ashley Tillett and Rob Crocker respectively, to leave the home team reeling on 12-3.
Thereafter there was to be no real recovery, Berg picking up his second wicket to a sharp low catch at 3rd slip by Steve Lowe and Browne collecting 2 more victims, before Burger entered the attack to claim 3 quick wickets, one of which was thanks to a sensational diving left handed catch by Rob Crocker. Browne mopped up the innings when Lowe took his fourth catch of the day, another superb effort diving forward at short mid wicket, as the medium pacer bagged 5-36, whilst Berg finished with 2-15 and Burger 3-7, Royal dismissed for 58 in just under 20 overs.
As much as Radlett's seamers enjoyed the conditions, so did Farnham Royal's Krishmar Santokie. The Jamaican left arm quickie used all his skill and variation as he tore in to the Radlett top order in the short stint before lunch, dismissing both openers Matt Evans and Graham Dill with just 2 runs on the board. Lowe and Burger steadied the ship either side of the interval, but stormy waters re-emerged as Santokie dismissed Lowe (10) , Berg (10) and keeper Tom Jenkins to reduce Radlett to 39-5. James Lewis (11) went for his shots and relieved some pressure before he was bowled by Santokie with just 2 needed for victory. When Tillett fell in the same over, Santokie had remarkable figures of 7-27, but Chippeck survivied the hat trick ball before Burger ,calmness personified, saw his team home with a steadfast and assured 20 not out, the highest score of the day.
Chippeck was a relieved man, commenting: " We were made to work really hard for the win despite the small target, and full credit to Krishmar Santokie who turned in a superb spell of bowling to really put us under pressure. However, the win was well deserved as we turned in an outstanding display of bowling backed up by some superb catching, one of the best all round efforts I have ever seen from a Radlett team. I was delighted our bowlers used their heads as well as their skills to quickly assess conditions and make maximum use of them, whilst the hard work being put in at training is now bearing fruit with the standard of our fielding and catching."
Radlett were the only winners in last weekends round of matches, to move to 2nd place in the Sommers UK HCPL 15 pts behind leaders Slough, and will be looking to consolidate their position when Falkland visit the Brunton Memorial Ground at Cobden Hill this Saturday.
