Radlett 313-5 declared (63 overs)
Finchampstead 225-7 (57 overs)

Draw - Finchampstead 7 pts Radlett 14 pts.

After last weeks demolition of Henley, Radlett were denied successive Sommers UK HCPL wins by a combination of fading light and stubborn resistence at Finchampstead Park. Chasing an improbable 314 to win, Finchampstead slumped to 34-5 as master medium pacer Stuart Browne ripped through the top order claiming the first 4 wickets, and had a hand in the fifth, safely pouching a catch off the bowling of Shane Burger. With 40 overs remaining victory appeared there for the taking, but Hampshire keeper/batsman Tom Burrows and Nick Denning dug in and resisted everything Radlett could throw at them in a 105 run partnership for the sixth wicket.

It was off spinner Rob Crocker who finally made the breakthrough, dismissing Denning (35) courtesy of James Lewis at short leg, his second sharp catch of the innings, but Burrows battled on reaching a richly deserved century before finally falling to Crocker's next delivery, a classic off spinners dismissal, bowled through the gate attempting to drive through the off side. Requiring just 3 wickets in final 14 overs, fading light denied Radlett the chance to use their pace bowlers to mop up the tail, and despite crowding the batsmen with 6 fielders round the bat, the spinners Crocker, Kabir Toor and James Lewis were unable to force any further breakthroughs as the game ended in draw.

Earlier, having been put in to bat, Radletts batsmen took full advantage of excellent batting conditions to rack up the clubs second highest total in HCPL cricket. Openers Matt Evans and Graham Dill had all but seen off a fiery opening spell from Gavin Tonge, when Dill (16) saw his leg stump uprooted by a rapid yorker form the Antiguan paceman. Evans (33) fell soon after to the spin of Harper, before Shane Burger joined Steve Lowe to put on 53 in good time before Burger fell on the stroke of lunch to the returning Tonge, leaving the score at 121-3 at the break.

Thereafter it was all Radlett, as the in form Lowe went on the attack immediately after the interval, sweeping two big sixes and driving with power and authority on both sides of the wicket. It was somewhat of a surprise when the left hander fell to superb one handed slip catch by Harper off Denning for a fine 71, but Gareth Berg joined teenager Kabir Toor in a tremendous partnership that put Radlett in complete control. They combined for a club record HCPL 5th wicket partnership of 129 in just 16 overs as a tiring attack was hammered to all parts. Berg was in great touch, ruthlessly depsatching anything loose, being particularly harsh on the slow bowling of Harper and hammering two huge sixes as he raced to 80 off just 61 balls. Toor once again showed his maturity in playing a fine supporting role to the Berg power show, before himself opening up in the final few overs to produce some fine stroke play on his way to an accomplished 70 not out. Radlett's total of 313-5 was just one run short of their highest in HCPL cricket, and was ultimately never threatened, and the 14 points garnered in the match took Radlett up to 5th place just 13 points behind leaders Slough.

Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck commented: " Having dominated the game, we were somewhat dissappointed not to have secured a win, but the fact that Finchampstead fought hard all the way down shows their character and the strength and depth in this league. Credit to Tom Burrows for a fine hundred under pressure and for resisting the best we could throw at him. On a very good pitch, I felt our bowlers did exceptionally well and it was somewhat frustrating that bad light meant we were unable to use our quick bowlers at the end when they would have been fresh, especially given that the only reason we were out there past 7pm was Finchampstead's slow over rate earlier in the day, not our own rate. Although both umpires had excellent matches I thought we might have had a bit of latitude given the reasons why we were out there past the usual cut off time, but overall I was delighted with our level of performance, and some of the stroke play from Steve Lowe, Gareth Berg, and Kabir Toor was simply magnificent."
