Radlett CC 1st XI v Henley on Sat 02 Jun 2007 at 11:00
Radlett CC Won By 118 runs
Match report
Saturday 2 June
Sommers UK Home Counties Premier League
Radlett CC 236-7 (66 overs)
Henley CC 118 all out (35.3 overs)
Radlett won by 118 runs
Radlett claimed their first victory of the 2007 Sommers UK HCPL season with an emphatic victory as Gareth Berg marked his return from injury with a match winning haul of wickets as Henley succumbed for 118 inside 36 overs in pursuit of 237 to win. In conjunction with Shane Burger, the Radlett new ball pair were nigh on unplayable as they combined pace, accuray and swing to take 9 wickets between them, Berg collecting his first Premier League 5 wicket haul for his new club, whilst Burger, still recovering form a shoulder injury himself, was back to something approaching his best to finish with 4-44. Henley's talented top order had no answer as they collpased to 13-4 before experinced hands Todd Ferguson and skipper Bjorn Mordt led a mini revivial. Their partnership was worth 64, and threatened Radlett's victory charge, but when Burger dismissed both in his second spell in successive overs, the resistence was broken and the last 6 wickets fell for 41 runs.
Earlier, Mordt had won what appeared to be a crucial toss, and put Radlett in to bat, hoping his bowlers would take advantage of the pitch still damp and somewhat under prepared after heavy rain earlier in the week had hampered preparation. Indeed, after just 3 balls it appeared Henley would make full use of the conditions as Griffiths picked up 2 wickets without a run on the board. Shane Burger began the rebuilding job , mixing studious defence with some enterprising stroke play and with attacking fields in place and the outfield as fast as ever, runs began to flow from his blade. With opener Matt Evans battling away, Burger dominated the scoring to the extent that he himself accounted for 41 of the first 50 runs. By that stage Evans had been dismissed by Greyvenstein, who was in the midst of a steady spell of medium paced bowling. Burger passed 50, but Greyvenstein put his side back in command with a double strike just before lunch bowling him for a well made 66 and picking up Gareth Berg caught at slip, to leave the interval score 87-5.
Thereafter, Herts keeper Tom Jenkins and Haydn Smith combined for a sensational 6 wicket partnership that wresltled control of the match and was ultimately decisive in the outcome. In conditions that were still problematic for batting, both players played some superb strokes, ran hard between the wickets, and got just rewards for their positive attitude as Henley wilted in the afternoon sunshine. Jenkins was first to his half century but soon after crashed a full toss to mid wicket for a superb 60, but Smith showed his nous and experience to bat through the allocation of overs for an oustanding 75 not out and take Radlett to 236-7 , and extremely good score in the prevailing conditions.
It was then over to Berg and Burger whose combined figures of 9-75 off 30 overs did due justice to their outstanding spells. They exploited consitions and the new ball to maximum effect and were ruthless in finishing the job off with 18 overs to spare. A comprehensive 118 run victory was indeed an unlikely conclusion given Henley's early dominance, but was testament to a superb all round effort from Radlett to turn things around during the course of the afternoon.
Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck, commented:: " To beat as strong a team as Henley in such fashion is massively uplifting for us, and to show the guts and spirit to fight back from a difficult position speaks volumes for the type of characters we have in our side. There is plenty to work at and improve on, but this result was just reward for the team given the overall level of cricket we have produced in the first month or so of the league season".
