Banbury v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 26 May 2007 at 11:00
Radlett CC Lost by 6 wkts

Match report Historically, the long journey up the M40 into the Cherwell Valley to visit Banbury has not been particularly productive, and this was no different as Radlett were well beaten despite an outstanding undefeated century from South African all rounder Shane Burger.

Entering the fray with Radlett in some trouble after the early loss of both openers, Burger first set about rebuilding the innings in the period up until lunch, before taking the attack to the bowlers and unfurling some pleasant stroke play off front and back foot. In partnership with Steve Lowe (63), the pair added 120 for the third wicket to build the foundation for the eventual total of 249 off the 66 over allocation.

This represented a fine recovery as in the early procedings Banbury seamers Newhook and Smith dominated affairs to the extent that just 10 runs came form the opening 11 overs. Indeed it was slow going through the morning session as Burger and Lowe rebuilt from the precarious position of 31-2 to reach 75-2 off 35 overs at the interval, and it was that period of hard graft which enabled the accleration to come as both men cashed in to build big scores. Lowe fell attempting to force the pace against former Northants and England seamer Paul Taylor, where upon teenager Kabir Toor added a fine run a ball cameo of 28 before holing out on the boundary. Burger however saw the job through with a superb 106 not out, whilst Tom Jenkins, James Lewis and skipper Dan Chippeck all fell in the pursuit of runs in the closing stages.

There was drama with the very first ball of the Banbury reply, as master medium pacer Stuart Browne wrapped skipper Ben Hector on the pads right in front of the stumps, but somehow the batsman was given the benefit of what little doubt there could have been to survive the huge appeal and thereafter the south african provincial player really put Radlett's young bowling attack to the sword, punishing anything short or wide as the scoreboard rattled round at 8 an over. Burger accounted for Chris Smith (39), but Hector and Craig Haupt (30) took Banbury in sight of victory. The run rate slowed and Haupt was run out taking on Rob Crocker's arm and finishing comfortably second best. But, Hector was in determined mood and , with plenty of time in hand courtesy of the lightening start, used his first class experience to wait for the bad ball and punish it unerringly. He cruised past the century mark, and despite losing Hawtin and Ryan to spinners Lewis and Toor respectively, he took his side to victory with some 6 overs to spare, finishing on 132 not out.

Radlett's centurion and star man Shane Burger commented:" Whilst personally I was delighted to make a hundred, our performance in the field and with the ball was not up to the standard required, and our captain had every right to be dissappointed with that side of things. We all felt 250 was a good score in those conditions and whilst Hector played extremely well, we did not make things hard enough for him nor their other batsmen, and thats something we must improve on with immediate effect."
