Radlett CC Lost By 4 wkts

Match report Radlett were welcomed back to Sommers UK HCPL Division 1 action with an opening day trip to defending champions Slough. As if to signal their intent to build on their success, Slough included three new recruits with international experience, two of whom, South African pace bowler Nantie Hayward and former England all rounder Chris Lewis, combined to open the attack after Slough skipper Bobby Sher won an important toss on a damp, overcast morning.

The international quality of the new ball bowling attack was an early reminder to Radlett's top order, who had regularly gorged themselves last season on the more friendly offerings that presented themselves in Division 2 East, of exactly the step up in standard that they were encountering. After 14 overs of genuine pace, the scoreboard read 13-3 and Radlett were staring a heavy defeat in the face. However, Matt Evans and Gareth Berg combined to see off the remainder of the opening spells displaying immense determination and no little courage, qualities they were rewarded for displaying when the back up bowlers entered the fray and batting became easier, Berg particularly being harsh on the bad balls. The partnership flourished to the extent that lunch was taken at 73-3 with the game well poised.

An hours rain delay did not help the batting sides cause as their allocation was cut from 66 to 57 overs, and time became a factor almost immediately. Evans fell shortly after the resumption for a battling 23, and Berg was adjudged LBW shortly after completing an excellent half century on his first appearance at this level. These wickets followed by the dismissal of the in form Tom Jenkins took the momentum out the innings, and thereafter it was only 17 year old debutant Kabir Toor who made any impression with a well made 27 as Radlett stumbled past the 150 mark for a second batting point.

It was a case of "anything you can do..." as Radletts new ball attack of Burger and Berg quickly reduced Slough to 20-3, Berg bowling a particularly fiery spell to compliment Burger's accuracy and swing, and with the bat being beaten on a regular basis there was a whiff of an upset. However, Bobby Sher, crucially dropped in the slips early on, dug in for his team and rebuilt the innings in the company of Lewis. Berg returned to the attack after tea to claim Lewis LBW, before Toor , bowling his leg breaks with accuracy and penetration, found the edge of Sher's bat and followed up with Ahmed's wicket again to well taken catch by keeper Jenkins. At 115-6 the game was in the balance, but Mohammed Khan, who had earlier claimed 5-33, completed a fine all round performance to see his side home with a crucial 32 not out.

Radlett skipper Dan Chippeck said:" Whilst its always dissappointing to lose, Slough are a tremendous outfit . Its not often you are faced with the sort of quality of genuine pace bowling that they possess, and its a credit to Evans, Berg and Toor that they dug in and battled to build a total for us to defend. It was encouraging to see our attack ask questions and push them all the way whilst our spirit in the field was excellent. Its a steep learning curve in this league but if we can keep showing the spirit and determination we displayed in this fixture we will be a comptetitve outfit."
