Match report Shutters Down Before Last Orders

On what could have been one of the hottest Saturdays so far this season, Radlett II's entertained a strong and well-respected Bishop Stortford XI at Cobden Hill. Stortford sitting near the bottom of Division One needed to clearly make their mark at Radlett if they were to have any chance of elevating themselves out of the looming relegation zone. After an emphatic victory over Hitchin, Matt Cousens and his band of merry Radlett cricketers felt fairly confident of repeating both the fielding and batting performance
witnessed at Cobden Hill the previous week, however in such heat, the conditions would differ quite considerably.

Skipper Matt Cousens lost the flip and Stortford decided to bat, a decision enthusiastically received by the visiting team. Having lost opening bowler Simon Jackson to a strained chest muscle, Radlett opened with pace-man and resident Australian Gary Burchett, and Jon Tricker, hero of the previous week's demolition of Hitchin. With the outfield sporting a new grade one haircut, Stortford got off to a racy start before Tricker foxed the Stortford opener into a rushed shot which was lapped up by the ever flamboyant set of hands at gully Dave Robinson. Stortford batted with great dedication, in part aided by a lovely batting track, a lightening fast outfield and some fancy willow action, and looked at one point to be on track for a very big score. Radlett fought back hard and showed impressive team application with solid bowling performances from vice-captain David Hegarty (1-47), Jon Tricker (3-76) and a fiery last minute spell from Gary Burchett (3-46) who combined, limited Stortford to 243-8 off the allotted 53 overs. A big score, but at just 5 an over, a score well within Radlett's reach.

Having impressed with the bat, Stortford were clearly in the driving seat, however the reputation of Radlett's second team may have been too much for the Stortford skipper, who surprisingly decided to restrict the home side from scoring the required 5 an over by setting a very defensive field from the off. With 243 being a steep ask for any side batting second, Radlett's batsmen expected to be chasing from the first ball but after the first 10 overs, the target was looking some way off in the distance. With solid batting performances from Matt Cousens (26), Nigel Barlow (29), Rob Crocker (35*) and Jon Freedman (39), Radlett finished on 165-7 and Stortford had managed to secure the draw for which they had so keenly played.

Radlett II's travel to picturesque Knebworth Park on Saturday for the second leg of this season's fixtures. Earlier this year, Knebworth Park beat Radlett by 4 wickets, a score Radlett skipper Matt Cousens would like to settle at the weekend.
